A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE THE DIXIE HUMMINGBIRDS FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TOWARD PRESERVING THE HERITAGE OF AFRICAN AMERICAN GOSPEL MUSIC, SPREADING KNOWLEDGE AND LOVE OF THIS MUSICAL TREASURE, AND CREATING NEW AUDIENCES FOR ITS ENJOYMENT.

Whereas, gospel music is an integral part of the cultural fiber of South Carolina and the United States and, more particularly, of the African American community; and

Whereas, the history of gospel music and the African American community are interwoven in such a way that the music has often reflected the struggle, challenges, and victories of the African American community; and

Whereas, as part of the gospel music industry for more than seventy years, The Dixie Hummingbirds are one of the most recognized gospel groups to tour this country, and lead singer Ira Tucker has one of the most recognized voices in gospel music; and

Whereas, Mr. Tucker, who sang with The Dixie Hummingbirds when they were founded in the Greenville-Spartanburg area of South Carolina, is the only remaining original member who still performs and travels with this pioneering, influential gospel group; and

Whereas, although blessed to call the United States home, The Dixie Hummingbirds perform well beyond its boundaries, possessing a well-deserved worldwide reputation as the greatest gospel group ever to sing the Good News of Jesus. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize The Dixie Hummingbirds for their outstanding contribution toward preserving the heritage of African American gospel music, spreading knowledge and love of this musical treasure, and creating new audiences for its enjoyment.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to The Dixie Hummingbirds.
