A SENATE RESOLUTION

CELEBRATING THE NEWBERRY COLLEGE FOOTBALL PROGRAM ON ITS FIRST-EVER SOUTH ATHLETIC CONFERENCE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP, HONORING THEIR SEASON OF SPIRITED COMPETITION, INSPIRING PERSEVERANCE, AND TREMENDOUS ACHIEVEMENT, AND WISHING THEM EVERY SUCCESS IN THEIR FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the Newberry College Indians had an impressive season, winning its first-ever South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Championship; and

Whereas, in their first NCAA Division II football playoffs, the Indians won an exciting 34-28 game, defeating Albany State to advance to the second round; and

Whereas, despite a valiant effort, the team lost to the number three team in the rankings, North Alabama. However, through their tremendous efforts and perseverance, the team finished the season twelfth in the national rankings; and

Whereas, several school records were broken during the season. The 2006 Indians posted a best-ever 11-2 record, with ten regular-season victories, and an unprecedented 9-0 record at home on Setzler Field; and

Whereas, cumulative 2006 statistics have the team averaging over thirty points per game compared to their opponents, who only averaged about sixteen points per game, the team also had over 2400 rushing yards and almost 2700 passing yards, with the defense holding their foes to only 1600 rushing and 1800 passing yards; and

Whereas, the team is full of outstanding individual talent expertly coordinated into a nearly unstoppable team under the direction of Head Coach Zak Willis. For his efforts, Coach Willis was named the SAC Coach of the Year; and

Whereas, the team boasts eight players who were named to the All-South Atlantic Conference Team, with quarterback Josh Stepp SAC Offensive Player of the Year, candidate for the Harlon Hill Trophy and named All-State; Heath Benedict recipient of the Jacobs Blocking Trophy, given to the top blocker in the SAC and named first team All-American; Derrell Mills first team All Southeast Region, also holding the SAC season-high record of six interceptions; Ty Zimmerman named an All-State player; and Will Newell leading the SAC in total defense and tackles, also named first team All-SAC; and

Whereas, the Indians are a great source of pride for the Newberry community; committing themselves to excellence and perseverance, the team had a record-breaking season. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, celebrate the Newberry College football team on its first-ever South Atlantic Conference championship, honor their season of spirited competition and tremendous achievement, and wish them much success in their future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Head Coach Zak Willis, President Dr. Mitchell Zais, and the rest of the 2006 Newberry College Indians football coaches, team, and staff.
