A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR DR. JEAN M. NORMAN, OF COLUMBIA, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT COUNCIL, FOR HER TIRELESS EFFORTS ON BEHALF OF OUR STATE'S SCHOOL CHILDREN, DURING A VERY DISTINGUISHED CAREER, UPON HER RETIREMENT FROM THIS POSITION.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are saddened to learn that one of this State's most respected educators, Dr. Jean M. Norman, of Columbia, will be retiring as Executive Director of the South Carolina School Improvement Council in June of this year; and

Whereas, this accomplished professional became Executive Director of the South Carolina School Improvement Council (SC-SIC) in 1988 and has served in this capacity to the present with great distinction; and

Whereas, functions of the SC-SIC include directing the design of staff development for principals, teachers, and parents to develop their capacities for improving their schools, overseeing the development and production of publications distributed to 17,000 council members, directing the development of video-based and web-based access to information and training, overseeing the reporting and funding process of the General Assembly and administration of the budget to achieve strategic goals, and collaborating with state agencies and professional organizations to advance the status of local councils and coordinating joint actions; and

Whereas, Dr. Norman holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Arts degree from Florida State University and a Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Tennessee and has been very active in numerous professional organizations and endeavors during her career; and

Whereas, she has worked in many varied capacities including classroom teacher, principal, curriculum coordinator, coordinator of training, publications and regional direction before assuming the duties of her current position; and

Whereas, she has been and will continue to be an effective voice for South Carolina's children and for a quality education to which they all are entitled; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution would like to publicly recognize and thank Jean Norman for all that she's done on behalf of this State's students upon the occasion of her retirement as Executive Director of the SC-SIC. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor Dr. Jean M. Norman, of Columbia, Executive Director of the South Carolina School Improvement Council, for her tireless efforts on behalf of our State's school children, during a very distinguished career, upon her retirement from this position.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Jean M. Norman.
