A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO HONOR JUDGE CURTIS G. SHAW, OF GREENWOOD, AND TO EXPRESS THE GRATITUDE OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES FOR HIS COMMITTED SERVICE ON THE JUDICIAL MERIT SELECTION COMMISSION SINCE ITS INCEPTION.

Whereas, in order that the legal matters facing the courts be adjudicated with justice and expedition, it is incumbent upon the General Assembly to elect justices and judges who are known for their integrity, knowledge of the law, skill in applying that law, and promptitude; and

Whereas, for the furtherance of the judicial selection process in the State of South Carolina, the General Assembly has established the Judicial Merit Selection Commission, which is charged with the task of considering the qualifications of candidates for members of the judiciary; and

Whereas, since the inception of the Judicial Merit Selection Commission, Judge Curtis G. Shaw, a public servant eminently qualified to act as one of the commission's ten appointees, has served with distinction as a dedicated member of that body; and

Whereas, he brings to the commission extensive legal experience, including service as Senior Judge of the South Carolina Court of Appeals, Chief Judge of the Family Court of the Eighth Judicial Circuit, Probate Judge and Master-in-Equity for Greenwood County, City Municipal Court Judge for Greenwood, as well as service on Greenwood City Council and in the United States Army Corps of Engineers. For his exceptional service, he was honored as the South Carolina Trial Lawyers' Most Outstanding Judge in South Carolina in 1994; and

Whereas, not just an attorney and judge, Curtis G. Shaw has served his State as a member of the College of Charleston Board of Visitors, and his church, Greenwood First Baptist, as a deacon. A recipient of Greenwood's Outstanding Young Man of the Year Award in his early years, he has always served his community in countless ways, including volunteer work with Meals on Wheels and Self Regional Health Care; and

Whereas, he has selflessly given his time, skills, and leadership capacity to vital service on the Judicial Merit Selection Commission for the benefit of the citizens of South Carolina, to help ensure that our judges and justices are men and women we can trust and rightfully honor; and

Whereas, in recognition of Judge Shaw's many years of faithful service on the Judicial Merit Selection Commission, the House of Representatives wishes to extend sincere thanks for a job well done and warm wishes for much happiness and fulfillment in all his future endeavors. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, honor Judge Curtis G. Shaw, of Greenwood, and express their gratitude for his committed service on the Judicial Merit Selection Commission since its inception.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Judge Curtis G. Shaw.
