A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE ONE OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S MOST OUTSTANDING PROFESSIONAL GOLFERS, JAY HAAS OF GREENVILLE COUNTY, FOR HIS TREMENDOUSLY SUCCESSFUL PLAYING CAREER WHICH CONTINUES TODAY ON THE CHAMPIONS TOUR, FOR HIS MANY CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE GAME, ESPECIALLY IN HIS HOME STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA ON BEHALF OF JUNIOR GOLF, AND FOR HIS UPCOMING INDUCTION INTO THE SOUTH CAROLINA GOLF HALL OF FAME IN DECEMBER OF THIS YEAR.

Whereas, the State of South Carolina has been blessed through the years with many fine amateur and professional athletes, but perhaps one of the most successful has been professional golfer Jay Haas of Greenville County; and

Whereas, Jay Dean Haas was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on December 2, 1953, he attended Wake Forest University, and was a member of the Wake Forest NCAA Championship team of the 1970's, where he also won the individual championship in 1975. He turned professional in 1976; and

Whereas, he has had a solid career on the PGA Tour, winning nine times between 1978 and 1993. He had a resurgence in 2003, when he finished in the top thirty on the money list for the first time since 1995 and made the United States Presidents Cup team. The following year he was one of two captain's picks for the Ryder Cup and made his third appearance in that event. He also holds the record for most "cuts" made on the PGA Tour; and

Whereas, he became eligible to play in Champions Tour events for players at least age fifty at the beginning of the 2004 season, and he lost by one stroke at the Senior PGA Championship in his first appearance at that level. In 2005, he won twice on the Champions Tour, while continuing to play regularly on the PGA Tour. In April 2006, he won back to back events on the Champions Tour, and the following month he won a playoff at the Oak Tree Golf Club at the Senior PGA Championship to claim his first senior major, and he went on to top the 2006 Champions Tour money list. He was named the Champions Tour Player of the Year in 2006; and

Whereas, Jay Haas comes from a distinguished family of golfers. He is a nephew of 1968 Masters winner Bob Goalby and has several other relatives in golf including his second son, Bill, who was a PGA Tour rookie in 2006. His oldest son, Jay, Jr., and brother, Jerry Haas, also played on the PGA Tour; and

Whereas, he was voted the 2006 Bob Jones Award, the highest honor given by the United States Golf Association in recognition of distinguished sportsmanship in golf. In February 2005, he received the Payne Stewart Award, and in April 2005, he received the Murray Award for his cooperation with the media; and

Whereas, perhaps what endears Jay Haas to his many friends and admirers is what he has done for the betterment of the game in regard to junior golf. In South Carolina alone, his contributions to the South Carolina Junior Golf Association include:

(1)    being responsible for the first corporate contribution to the South Carolina Junior Golf Association prior to its foundation being established;

(2)    being the namesake and presenting the Jay Haas Boy's Player of the Year Award since 1994;

(3)    donating his time to make several public service appearances in support of the South Carolina Junior Golf Association and its corporate partners;

(4)    playing in several Hootie and the Blowfish Monday after the Master's events in support of the South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation;

(5)    returning to Thornblade, his home course, each year to provide an instructional clinic for the club; and

Whereas, there is no better "friend of golf" than Jay Haas and it is fitting that the members of the General Assembly pause in their deliberations to publicly recognize and thank this truly wonderful South Carolinian for all he has accomplished in his playing career and for all he has given back to the game in his home state of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly honor and recognize one of South Carolina's most outstanding professional golfers, Jay Haas of Greenville County, for his tremendously successful playing career which continues today on the Champions Tour, for his many contributions to the game, especially in his home state of South Carolina on behalf of junior golf, and for his upcoming induction into the South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame in December of this year.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Jay Haas.
