A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE GRATITUDE OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TO THE HONORABLE JOHN BARNETT ASHLEY, SR., FOR HIS TEN YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE AS ASSISTANT TOWN JUDGE AND LATER TOWN JUDGE OF HONEA PATH UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT, AND TO WISH HIM MUCH SUCCESS AND FULFILLMENT IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives notes with regret that after ten years of dedicated service, the Honorable John Barnett Ashley, Sr., is retiring from the position of town judge of Honea Path; and

Whereas, a native of the Turkey Creek Church community near Ware Shoals, John Barnett Ashley was born a son of Jesse Thomas Ashley, Jr., and Florence Lillian O'Dell Ashley in 1925. After completing his education in 1942, he continued his work in the shop of Riegel Mill but left shortly thereafter to serve as an electrician at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, during World War II. He then enlisted and served the remainder of the war in the United States Navy; and

Whereas, upon returning home, he reentered the civilian work force at Riegel Mill but in 1948 began work as a Metropolitan Life Insurance Company agent, retiring from MetLife in 1980. In 1981, Mr. Ashley was appointed a summary court judge of Anderson County for the Honea Path area, in which capacity he served until his 1997 retirement; and

Whereas, soon after this retirement, he was asked to serve as the assistant town judge of Honea Path, later taking up the post of full-time town judge in that municipality; and

Whereas, this civic-minded true son of Honea Path has not limited himself to service as a judge; in further giving of his time and resources, he was, among other things, an auxiliary policeman for several years, served one term on the Anderson County School District Board of Trustees, was chairman of the Anderson County School Districts One and Two Career Center, and, as a current member of the Honea Path Presbyterian Church, serves the Lord there; and

Whereas, Judge Ashley and his beloved wife of nearly sixty-four years, Nancy Virginia Saxon Ashley, now deceased, are the proud parents of two sons, John B. Ashley, Jr., and Phillip Saxon Ashley, who blessed their parents with two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, all of Honea Path; and

Whereas, having served with distinction as a judge for many years, John Barnett Ashley, Sr., will embark on a well-earned retirement on May 31, 2007; and

Whereas, upon the occasion of his retirement from the position of town judge of Honea Path, it is fitting that the House of Representatives acknowledge with gratitude the great debt of the State of South Carolina to this servant-hearted man of integrity. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their gratitude to the Honorable John Barnett Ashley, Sr., for his ten years of dedicated service as assistant town judge and later town judge of Honea Path upon the occasion of his retirement, and wish him much success and fulfillment in all his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Honorable John Barnett Ashley, Sr.
