A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND THE WOFFORD COLLEGE TERRIERS BASEBALL TEAM FOR WINNING THE 2007 SOUTHERN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP, AND FOR BEING THE FIRST BASEBALL TEAM IN THE HISTORY OF WOFFORD COLLEGE TO WIN THE SOUTHERN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP OR PLAY IN THE NCAA DIVISION I BASEBALL TOURNAMENT.

Whereas, the Wofford College Terriers baseball team won the 2007 Southern Conference championship with a 4-2 victory over The Citadel at the conference tournament on May 26, 2007, at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in Charleston; and

Whereas, in winning the 2007 conference championship, the Terriers made school history by claiming their first Southern Conference baseball title and clinching the school's first appearance in the NCAA Division I baseball tournament; and

Whereas, entering the tournament as underdogs, the ninth-seeded Terriers also made conference history by becoming the lowest-seeded team to win the championship, and the first team to prevail after entering the tournament having to win a single-elimination play-in game on opening day; and

Whereas, the Terriers were led to their first baseball championship by Head Coach Steve Traylor and Assistant Coaches Todd Interdonato, Scott Brickman, and Jason Burke; and

Whereas, the Terriers' squad is comprised of a group of highly talented student athletes, including Dave Banks, Kyle Behrendt, Eric Sturkie, Steven Fusaro, Dawson Smith, Mo Seay, Brandon Waring, Shanke Kirkley, Chuck Eller, Michael Gilmartin, Keith Munns, Bradford Eaves, Neil Robinette, Sterling Dye, Emre Caglayan, Jesse Cole, John Brandt, Adam Wood, Reid McElveen, Ben Austin, Chip Hunt, Adam Kearney, Whit Kennedy, Lance Player, Charles Vartanian, Zack Parmer, Austin Redwine, Geoff Taylor, Jordan Mickleberry, Nicholas Yeaw, Tom Dolinak, Mike McDonnell, and Ryan Conway; and

Whereas, although success is a team effort, Brandon Waring of Lexington County distinguished himself by being named to the Louisville Slugger Division I All-American baseball team, first-team All Southern Conference honors, and being named most valuable player of the 2007 Southern Conference Tournament. A two-time academic all-conference selection, Waring is among the top college baseball players in the nation in the categories of home runs, slugging percentage, runs scored, and runners batted in, among others; and

Whereas, the Wofford College baseball team has brought tremendous excitement, attention, and pride to Wofford College, the City and County of Spartanburg, and the State of South Carolina, and the House of Representatives is pleased to have this opportunity to recognize such a wonderful group of talented young student athletes and their coaches. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and commend the Wofford College Terriers baseball team for winning the 2007 Southern Conference Championship, and for being the first baseball team in the history of Wofford College to win the Southern Conference Championship or play in the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Head Coach Steve Traylor, Athletic Director Richard Johnson, and Dr. Benjamin Dunlap, President of Wofford College.
