VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE TRAGIC DEATH OF MRS. HATTIE PEARL HUNTER OF ORANGEBURG COUNTY, AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, Mrs. Hattie Pearl Hunter of Orangeburg tragically passed away on May 18, 2007; and
Whereas, Mrs. Hunter, born in Dunn, North Carolina, was a daughter of the late Abraham and Rosa White, and wife of the late Dr. Milton Dial Hunter; and
Whereas, a graduate of Shaw University with undergraduate degrees in English and reading, Mrs. Hunter later earned a master of arts degree from the University of Indiana at Bloomington, remaining in Indiana following the completion of her studies so that she could teach school and enable her husband to pursue his doctoral degree; and
Whereas, a consummate educator, Mrs. Hattie Pearl Hunter taught in the public schools of South Carolina, North Carolina, Indiana, and Mississippi, before pursuing a teaching career in higher education, as chair of the English Department at Allen University, and later as an assistant professor of education at South Carolina State University from 1968-2005, teaching six years beyond her 1999 retirement. A motivated and caring educator and community leader, Professor Hunter's faithful service to South Carolina State University and the Orangeburg community earned her the designation as a "sower of good seeds"; and
Whereas, a child of God, Mrs. Hunter was a faithful, longtime member of Orangeburg's historic Williams Chapel A.M.E. Church, where she humbly served as a member of the Trustee Board, Women's Auxiliary, Missionary Society, and Food Preparation Committee. On May 13, 2007, she very successfully chaired the Women's Day service; and
Whereas, in addition to her commitment to family, faith, and education, Mrs. Hattie Pearl Hunter always made time to serve her community, most notably as a board member of the Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina, NAACP Woman of the Year on state and regional levels, treasurer of the Edisto Reading Council, treasurer of the South Carolina State Reading Council, treasurer of the Parlerdale Civic Association. She also was a member of Church Women United, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, and As You Like It Badge Club; and
Whereas, at the time of her tragic death, Mrs. Hunter had been predeceased by her parents, husband, and brothers Eugene White and Robert White. She is survived by nieces Rosetta White, Gail Clark, Mylaka Sankofa, Marian Gilmore, and Helen Alspaugh; nephews Robert White, Dr. Willis McLeod, Eugene White, and Anthony Thornton; in-laws James Hunter, Cheyne Washington, Melrose Floyd, and John T. Dial; godson Shane Walls; cousin Charlie Shaw; and a host of friends; and
Whereas, it is proper and fitting for the members of the House of Representatives to pause in their deliberations to recognize the passing of such an outstanding South Carolinian as Mrs. Hattie Pearl Hunter. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the tragic death of Mrs. Hattie Pearl Hunter of Orangeburg County, and extend their deepest sympathy to her family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of Mrs. Hattie Pearl Hunter.
