A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE LIFE OF GRACE YOHE STEVENS, A CHERISHED CITIZEN OF HORRY COUNTY, UPON THE OCCASION OF HER NINETY-EIGHTH BIRTHDAY, AND TO WISH HER MANY MORE YEARS OF PROSPERITY AND HAPPINESS.

Whereas, because few joys render more satisfaction than a long life filled with devotion to family, friends, and community, members of the South Carolina House of Representatives take pleasure in acknowledging the long life of Grace Stevens; and

Whereas, a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Grace Yohe, was born in Monongahela, Pennsylvania, on February 24, 1910; and

Whereas, her father served in the Spanish-American War, and a family relative has served in the Armed Forces in every war since the American Revolutionary War, including a grandson who presently serves in Iraq; and

Whereas, in 1930, she married Arch Grant, and they had a son Don, but seven years after she married her beloved husband, he drowned in Lake Erie; and

Whereas, in 1939, when she married Cotton Smith, they moved to the oil fields of Oklahoma with her young son, and in 1943 they moved again to Mid West City, Oklahoma, where Grace worked at Tinker Field Air Force Base packing parachutes for the war effort during World War II; and

Whereas, they returned to Monongahela in 1946, and she worked as a juvenile probation officer for many years; Cotton died in 1978; and

Whereas, in 1985, at the age of seventy-five, Grace married Eugene Stevens, a college professor, and they moved to San Diego County, California. When Eugene died a few years later, she moved again to the hills of Pennsylvania to live with her son and daughter-in-law, Don and Peggy Grant; and

Whereas, they have moved to Myrtle Beach where they still live together at Kingston Plantation, and she continues to be active in several of her varied interests; and

Whereas, although Grace is diminutive in stature, she lives a large life, marked by her winning smile and cheerful attitude and filled with passion for her country and church; and

Whereas, always active in politics, Grace served as president of the Republican Women in Monongahela, Pennsylvania, and through the years she has held many positions in her church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including teaching Sunday school and working with young people; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful that the Creator has so blessed "Amazing Grace" Stevens with a long life of service to her country and church. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the life of Grace Yohe Stevens, a cherished citizen of Horry County, upon the occasion of her ninety-eighth birthday, and wish her many more years of prosperity and happiness.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Grace Stevens.
