A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE DEATH OF JAMES DAVID WILLIAMS, SR., OF RICHLAND COUNTY, AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were deeply saddened to learn of the death of retired staff member for the House of Representatives James David "J. D." Williams on May 9, 2008; and

Whereas, born in Fairfield County on July 8, 1926, J. D. Williams graduated from Booker T. Washington High School before attending Benedict College; and

Whereas, in the finest patriotic tradition of the sons and daughters of South Carolina, J. D. Williams served with distinction in the United States Army and Navy; and

Whereas, he was married to his beloved Mary Ford Williams, and they raised five fine children, James D. Williams, Jr., Steven F. Williams, Gregory K. Williams, Marilyn W. Irick, and Camille W. Ford, who blessed their parents with seven adoring grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, in 1953, J. D. Williams became one of the original eight African-American firefighters for the City of Columbia, where he faithfully served the citizens for twenty-seven years; and

Whereas, receiving numerous awards and commendations including the Key to the City and the prestigious Order of the Palmetto, he worked as a staff member for the House of Representatives until 1996 when he retired. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of James David Williams, Sr., of Richland County, and extend their deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Mary Ford Williams.
