A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE DEEP SADNESS AND PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON THE DEATH OF KATHRYN ANNE BOCKMAN OF COLUMBIA ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2008.

Whereas, it is with great sadness that the members of the South Carolina General Assembly mourn the death of Kathryn "Kate" Anne Bockman, a bright, kind, caring, young woman whose promising life was taken in her untimely, tragic death on October 17, 2008; and

Whereas, Kate, the beloved daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Kevin Bockman, was born in Columbia on November 9, 1983. She was the loving older sister of Molly and Rob Bockman and the cherished fiancée of Joshua Golson of Columbia. She was educated in Columbia schools and graduated from Dreher High School in the Class of 2001; and

Whereas, throughout her education Kate excelled academically, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in anthropology and poetry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2005 and earning her Juris Doctor degree, with honors, from the University of South Carolina School of Law in May, 2008. While in law school she was on the editorial staff of the University of South Carolina Law Review, an Associate Justice of the Moot Court Bar, and a member of the Order of the Barristers and the Order of the Coif; and

Whereas, during law school she was a law clerk for the Senate Judiciary Committee and several Columbia law firms. At the time of her death, she was serving as law clerk to the Honorable Jean H. Toal, Chief Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court. Justice Toal, who has known Kathryn since she was born, said, "Katie is the brightest, gentlest, most caring child you could ever know."; and

Whereas, Kate was full of life and wonder and was passionate in her pursuit of knowledge. She was an avid reader and an expressive writer, who took great pleasure in her academic activities. She was devoted to her friends, diligent in her daily gym routine, and, as a lifelong Tar Heel fan, staunch in her support of Tar Heel basketball; and

Whereas, Kate was a dearly loved and treasured member of a large, close-knit extended family. She was the granddaughter of Elizabeth Greve Warwick and the late James F. Warwick and Thomas V. and Frances S. Bockman and Lea T. Bockman; and

Whereas, Kathryn's short life will be remembered by her family and all who knew her as one full of joy and grace with the brilliance of her light shinning beyond description. She leaves a legacy embodying an inquiring mind, a welcoming kindness, an abiding loyalty, and a loving peace; and

Whereas, it is proper and fitting for the members of the South Carolina General Assembly to pause in their deliberations to honor and recognize the life and passing of a truly exceptional, lovely young daughter of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, express deep sadness and profound sorrow upon the death of Kathryn Anne Bockman of Columbia on Friday, October 17, 2008.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Robert and Kevin Bockman.
