A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE MEMBERS OF THE 218TH HEAVY SEPARATE BRIGADE, THE LARGEST OF THE MAJOR SUBORDINATE COMMANDS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA NATIONAL GUARD, AND TO WISH THEM WELL IN THEIR YEAR-LONG DEPLOYMENT TO AFGHANISTAN, WHICH BEGINS IN FEBRUARY 2007.

Whereas, the 218th Heavy Separate Brigade is the largest of the major subordinate commands of the South Carolina National Guard; and

Whereas, the 218th is heir to a proud tradition going back to the colonial militia units that defended Charleston against the British invasion force in June 1776; and

Whereas, under the command of Colonel William Moultrie, this 800-man garrison of an unfinished fort of palmetto logs successfully repelled an attack from a British fleet and amphibious force of nearly 3,000 marines; and

Whereas, the current 218th Heavy Separate Brigade, headquartered in Newberry, has numerous units around the State and will continue its proud lineage by deploying approximately 1,800 South Carolina National Guardsmen to Afghanistan in February 2007 in support of the War on Terrorism; and

Whereas, the 218th's one-year deployment will be the largest single unit deployment in the history of the South Carolina National Guard; and

Whereas, the 218th's mission will be to assist in the training of the Afghanistan Army; and

Whereas, this type of service, loyalty, and commitment to our nation is highly commendable, and the General Assembly is proud to offer its gratitude in recognition of the guard members' service and sacrifice. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor the members of the 218th Heavy Separate Brigade, the largest of the major subordinate commands of the South Carolina National Guard, and wish them well in their year-long deployment to Afghanistan, which begins in February 2007.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the 218th Heavy Separate Brigade.
