A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE TOMMY ELLISON AND THE SINGING STARS FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TOWARD PRESERVING THE HERITAGE OF AFRICAN AMERICAN GOSPEL MUSIC, SPREADING KNOWLEDGE AND LOVE OF THIS MUSICAL TREASURE, AND CREATING NEW AUDIENCES FOR ITS ENJOYMENT.

Whereas, gospel music is an integral part of the cultural fiber of South Carolina and the United States and, more particularly, of the African American community; and

Whereas, the history of gospel music and the African American community are interwoven in such a way that the music has often reflected the struggles, challenges, and victories of the African American community; and

Whereas, as part of the gospel music industry for more than fifty years, Tommy Ellison and The Singing Stars, founded by Echo native "The Superstar" Mr. Tommy Ellison, are one of the most sought-after gospel groups to tour this country; and

Whereas, although blessed to call the United States home, Tommy Ellison and The Singing Stars perform well beyond its boundaries, possessing a well-deserved worldwide reputation as one of the best gospel groups ever to sing the Good News of Jesus. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize Tommy Ellison and The Singing Stars for their outstanding contribution toward preserving the heritage of African American gospel music, spreading knowledge and love of this musical treasure, and creating new audiences for its enjoyment.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Tommy Ellison and The Singing Stars.
