EXPRESSING THE AWARENESS AND CONCERN OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES FOR THE CITIZENS OF THIS STATE WHOSE LIVELIHOODS AND QUALITY OF LIFE HAVE SUFFERED DRASTICALLY AS A RESULT OF THE DROUGHT-INDUCED LOW LAKE LEVELS.
Whereas, the State of South Carolina is blessed with a collection of scenic lakes that serves as a resource for recreation, tourism, and agriculture; and
Whereas, boating is a popular pastime for residents and visitors alike, and the abundant striped bass, crappie, bream, catfish, and largemouth bass attract fishing enthusiasts, both amateur and professional, from around the world; and
Whereas, a large portion of South Carolina's economy depends on the businesses that flourish as a result of this natural blessing, from the Mom and Pop bait and tackle shops, to boat rentals and sales, to lodging for patrons of lake-related events, to farms green with irrigated crops; and
Whereas, these businesses, and the communities who thrive when they thrive, are figuratively gasping for air much like the endangered fish who literally depend on these lakes for their very lives; and
Whereas, it is appropriate for the House of Representatives to pause in its deliberations to acknowledge these hardships and offer heartfelt support and prayers for perseverance to the people of this State who are reeling from this diminished natural beauty and its bounty. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their awareness and concern for the citizens of this State whose livelihoods and quality of life have suffered drastically as a result of the drought-induced low lake levels.
