A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE UPON THE PASSING OF DEACON CLEVELAND SHIVERS, SR., AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Deacon Cleveland Shivers, Sr., of Cayce, formerly of North, on June 19, 2010; and

Whereas, Cleveland Shivers has been a loyal and faithful deacon at Ebenezer Baptist Church in North, South Carolina for over fifty years, first serving under Reverend W. B. Coleman and at the time of his pasing, serving under Reverend Michael D. Buckson; and

Whereas, Deacon Shivers, who lived in North most of his life, was known in his church and his community as a patriotic American and a model citizen, working tirelessly to educate and inform residents of North and members of Ebenezer Baptist Church of local, state, and national issues affecting their lives and the life of their community; and

Whereas, Mr. Shivers retired after forty years of dedicated service as the custodian of Cayce United Methodist Church, where he was a beloved member of that church family; and

Whereas, he is survived by his loving wife, Pearl O. Shivers, and his three children Ella Rose, Cleveland, Jr., and Alphonso; four grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren; and

Whereas, Deacon Shivers not only lived his life in service to his community, but he also lead a Christian life dedicated to serving the church and his God and was a living example of Micah 6:8 where followers of Christ are told to " . . .act justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God."; and

Whereas, Deacon Shivers, admired and respected by all who knew him, leaves a deep void in this community, church, and family, and he will be sorely missed by all. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Deacon Cleveland Shivers, Sr., and extend their deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Pearl O. Shivers.
