VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 56-1-287 SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT BEFORE A PERSON'S DRIVER'S LICENSE MAY BE SUSPENDED FOR FAILURE TO MAINTAIN INSURANCE ON A MOTOR VEHICLE OR OPERATING AN UNINSURED MOTOR VEHICLE, THE DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES MUST NOTIFY THE PERSON BY CERTIFIED MAIL THAT HIS DRIVER'S LICENSE WILL BE SUSPENDED.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. Article 1, Chapter 1, Title 56 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:
"Section 56-1-287. Before a person's driver's license is suspended for failure to maintain insurance on a motor vehicle or operating an uninsured motor vehicle, the Department of Motor Vehicles shall notify the person by certified mail that his driver's license will be suspended."
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
