A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND THE FML BOXING CLUB FOR ITS CHARACTER-BUILDING WORK AMONG THE YOUNG MEN OF ORANGEBURG COUNTY.

Whereas, in many inner-city neighborhoods of South Carolina, just as in such neighborhoods around the country, our youth are faced with enticements that often lead them into gang-related activity, drug use, and other negative behaviors. Lacking positive role models, they become easy prey for predators seeking to take advantage of these young people's unfortunate situation; and

Whereas, for young men needing a positive outlet for expending their youthful energy, the FML Boxing Club of Orangeburg County has stepped into the breach and become a source of hope, as well as a place where these young men can strengthen their personal skills and acquire an understanding that will enable them to resist the negative pressures that influence so many of them, through an organized program of amateur boxing; and

Whereas, located in Eutawville and founded by Dexter L. "Talkbout Jr." Ladson, Sr., in 1995, in honor of his grandparents, Frank and Maggie Ladson, who along with Dexter Ladson's father, Melvin, guided and supported "Talkbout Jr." in his love of boxing; and

Whereas, the FML Boxing Club's program fosters development of good sportsmanship, team unity, and self-respect. It gives youth the chance to learn self-discipline, exercise leadership, get involved, and make a difference in their communities; and

Whereas, as part of its character-building work, the FMS Boxing Club instills in its members the motto "It's boxing, not fighting"; and

Whereas, the FML Boxing Club has become a home away from home for many of the young people in and around Orangeburg County, and for its fine work among them the club is worthy of high praise. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and commend the FML Boxing Club for its character-building work among the young men of Orangeburg County.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the FML Boxing Club.
