A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO HONOR DR. HORACE WILLIAMS, JR., OF BEAUFORT COUNTY UPON THE OCCASION OF THE CELEBRATION OF HIS TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF FAITHFUL SERVICE AS PASTOR OF FAITH MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH AND TO RECOGNIZE HIM FOR OVER FORTY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO EDUCATION IN SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, on April 18, 2009, Faith Memorial Baptist Church on St. Helena Island, celebrated the twenty-fifth anniversary of Dr. Horace Williams, Jr. serving as their dedicated pastor and spiritual leader; and

Whereas, Pastor Williams was called to the ministry after starting, what was to become, a long and illustrious career in education; and

Whereas, born and raised in Colleton County, Dr. Williams, in 1964, received an associate of arts degree from Mather Junior College and a bachelor of science degree from South Carolina State University. In 1964 he began his career as a teacher, and in five short years he had become a teaching principal and then became principal at Battery Creek School; and

Whereas, by 1978 he had earned a masters degree from his alma mater, and he took further studies at Clemson University, Converse College, the University of Virginia, and the University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, following seminary studies at Columbia College and Morris College School of Religion in Sumter, he was awarded a doctorate of religious education in 1987 from Bethany Theological Seminary in Dothan, Alabama, where he distinguished himself by graduating summa cum laude; and

Whereas, for more than forty years Dr. Williams has been involved in education and has worked to improve the educational system and educational opportunities for children and adults in the public schools of this State and through religious instruction, the combination of which Dr. Williams considers integral to a well rounded life; and

Whereas, in addition to his contributions as a teacher and an administrator, Dr. Williams has served on the Foundation Board and the Scholarship Selection Committee for the Technical College of the Low Country. Upon retirement in 1996 he was serving as Transition Coordinator for Beaufort County Schools and is currently Director/Instructor for the Beaufort County Extension of Morris College Religious Certificate Programs; and

Whereas, he has been a pillar of the community and an exemplary leader who has provided tireless service through his affiliations with countless organizations. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and life membership with the NAACP. He has served as Chaplain of the Beaufort County Detention Center, Chairman of the Board of United Community Child Development, and as a member of the Joint Medical Ethics Committee for Beaufort and Hilton Head Hospitals; and

Whereas, among his numerous accolades, Dr. Horace Williams, Jr., received the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Humanitarian Award in 1993. In 1996 he was named Clergy of the Year by the Kiwanis Club of Beaufort and the Friend of the Year for Head Start. He also has been listed among the "Outstanding Young Men of America"; and

Whereas, Dr. Williams has been the pastor of Faith Memorial Baptist Church since 1984, where he has guided his flock and inspired his congregation with his wisdom, biblical scholarship, and powerful preaching of the Gospel; and

Whereas, the author of four books and numerous religious tracts, Dr. Williams still finds time to write a bi-weekly religious column for the "Gullah Sentinel"; and

Whereas, he and his beloved wife Louise Stroman together have raised a fine son, Roderick, and he and his wife Priscilla have made them the proud grandparents of Champ and Elisa Marie; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives express their gratitude to Dr. Horace Williams, Jr., for his many years of service on behalf of the citizens of this fine State and wish for him many more years of fulfillment in service to his God and to his fellow man. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, honor Dr. Horace Williams, Jr., of Beaufort County upon the occasion of the celebration of his twenty-five years of faithful service as pastor of Faith Memorial Baptist Church and recognize him for over forty years of dedicated service to education in South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Horace Williams.
