A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR DR. ANGELA BROWN BURKHALTER, UPON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT, FOR HER YEARS OF DEVOTED SERVICE TO THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA AS AN EDUCATOR.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives take great pleasure in expressing their appreciation for the dedication and commitment of Angela Brown Burkhalter to the field of education and, more importantly, to the students she has inspired over the years; and

Whereas, as an honor graduate and class officer of North Augusta High School in 1964, Angela Brown earned a scholarship to Winthrop University, then Winthrop College; and

Whereas, before she was awarded a bachelor's degree in English in 1968, she served as the president of the student body her senior year and represented Winthrop in the state's Student Legislature and served on the Southern University Student Government; and

Whereas, in 1968, she married her beloved William H. Burkhalter, Jr., and she and her devoted husband raised two fine children, Will and Beth Ann; and

Whereas, at her first teaching assignment, Wil Lou Gray Opportunity School, she established deep convictions that children can succeed with encouragement from caring teachers; and

Whereas, during three years at Wil Lou Gray, she was so involved in civic work that she was named the Cayce-West Columbia Junior Women's Club Woman of the Year; and

Whereas, she taught in Greenville and in North Augusta before taking a sabbatical after the birth of her second child, but even in that break she took on part-time projects, such as helping to organize and run a volunteer program to teach English as a second language in her church to Vietnamese refugees; and

Whereas, in 1975, she earned a master's degree in secondary English from the University of South Carolina and in 1976 served as president of the Winthrop Alumni Association and was elected to the Board of Trustees in 1982, serving for eight years; and

Whereas, from 1981 to 1990, she taught various grades at Hammond Hills Elementary School and was recognized as South Carolina Teacher of the Year in 1988. Through her active leadership in the South Carolina Teacher Forum, she advocated the establishment of the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and School Leadership; and

Whereas, she served from 1990 to 1995 as assistant principal of North Augusta Middle School, earned a degree in educational administration from the USC in 1991, and was named Tom Ackerman Assistant Principal of the Year in 1994; and

Whereas, after earning a doctorate in educational administration in 1995 from USC, she chose to stay as close to the students as possible where she could have the greatest impact, serving as principal of Jackson Middle School until 2002 and as principal of North Augusta Elementary since then, leading both schools to numerous notable awards; and

Whereas, serving both her church and community as well, she has taught the adult Bible study in her church for over twenty years and serves as president of the board of the Arts Heritage Center of North Augusta and on the North Augusta Arts Council Board; and

Whereas, she has given tirelessly to professional organizations and to the State Department of Education as a mentor to new principals and as a member of the External Review Team and as the president of the Phi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma; and

Whereas, it is fitting that the South Carolina House of Representatives pause in its deliberations to express the profound thankfulness of a grateful State for the lifetime of service that Dr. Angela Brown Burkhalter has given to the Palmetto State, and to wish her many years of happiness and continued satisfaction in her well-deserved retirement. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Dr. Angela Brown Burkhalter, upon the occasion of her retirement, for her years of devoted service to the State of South Carolina as an educator.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Angela Brown Burkhalter.
