A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE WORK OF FAMILY, CAREER AND COMMUNITY LEADERS OF AMERICA, AND TO CONGRATULATE THE STUDENTS OF WOODLAND HIGH SCHOOL IN DORCHESTER COUNTY WHO COMPETED SO SUCCESSFULLY IN THE 2010 STATE CONFERENCE.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to hear that the students of Woodland High School took top honors in several events at the state conference for Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) from March 18 to 20; and

Whereas, one of the largest vocational organizations in the country, FCCLA promotes personal growth and leadership through family and consumer-sciences education; and

Whereas, the national nonprofit organization for young men and women in family and consumer-science education focuses on the multiple roles that career and technical students will face as family members, wage earners, and community leaders; and

Whereas, the thirty active members of FCCLA at Woodland High School have developed skills for life through character development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communication, practical knowledge, and career preparation; and

Whereas, participating in the competition held in Columbia, twenty-one members of the Woodland High School chapter excelled in events such as applied technology, entrepreneurship, focus on children, interpersonal communication, job interview, and parliamentary procedures at the junior and senior levels; and

Whereas, eighteen students received gold medals in their events and will travel to Chicago in July to represent Woodland High School and Dorchester School District Four on the national level; and

Whereas, actively involved in their communities by donating their time and personal resources, these students prepared and provided fruit baskets for residents at Dorchester Senior Villas, donated canned goods and other items for an elderly resident of Ridgeland, and purchased and donated toys for a toy drive at St. George Middle School; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to commend the fine students of the FCCLA at Woodland High School and are grateful for the pride and recognition they have brought to their school, their communities, and their families. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the work of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, and congratulate the students of Woodland High School in Dorchester County who competed so successfully in the 2010 state conference.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Principal Bernard Utsey.
