A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR MARGUERITE SMALLS MIDDLETON OF DORCHESTER COUNTY, UPON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT, AND TO WISH HER MUCH SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN ALL HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to learn that after devoting herself to the education of students in South Carolina for more than thirty years, Marguerite Smalls Middleton will begin a well-earned retirement on July 31, 2010; and

Whereas, a native of Mount Pleasant, she was an honor graduate of Laing High School and earned a bachelor of arts in English and a master of education in counseling from the former South Carolina State College; and

Whereas, during her educational career, she has served as an English teacher, a guidance counselor, and an assistant principal before she became the principal of Minnie Hughes Elementary School on Yonges Island seventeen years ago; and

Whereas, when she came to Minnie Hughes Elementary School, it was a low-performance Title I School, and under her gifted leadership, the majority of students in the school now perform at or above standard on the state's standardized tests; and

Whereas, she has led the school in receiving numerous awards including the South Carolina State Department of Education Closing the Achievement Gap Award for three consecutive years in 2006, 2007, and 2008 and the 2010 recognition as one of the top three Title I Schools in the State as a Distinguished Schools Finalist for student achievement; and

Whereas, she is married to Seaward Middleton, Jr., and together they have raised three fine children: Dr. Tiffani Marguerite Middleton; S. Rashard Middleton III; and André Rogers; and

Whereas, she is an active member of New Israel Reformed Episcopal Church, where she chairs and serves on several auxiliaries, and she is a member of the East Cooper Chapter #365 of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Gamma Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; and

Whereas, realizing the critical responsibility and the important opportunity to make a difference in the community and the world by molding the minds of young students, Marguerite Middleton has served as an exemplary educator; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the pride she has brought to her family, her community, and her profession in over three decades of dedication to the children of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Marguerite Smalls Middleton of Dorchester County, upon the occasion of her retirement, and wish her much success and happiness in all her future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Marguerite Smalls Middleton.
