A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE UPON THE PASSING OF BENJAMIN HUGER RUTLEDGE MOORE OF JASPER COUNTY, AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Benjamin Huger Rutledge Moore of Jasper County on July 12, 2008; and

Whereas, born May 8, 1937, in Charleston from a long line of distinguished South Carolinians, Mr. Moore was the son of Benjamin Allston Moore and Susan Middleton Rutledge Moore. In preparation for his life's work, he completed his academic studies at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, graduating with the class of 1959; and

Whereas, in that same year, Mr. Moore began his professional career in the investment and securities industry as a registered representative for Johnson, Lane, Space, Smith & Company, Inc. A dedicated colleague and recognized leader, he was elected the executive vice president of Johnson Lane in 1982, at which time he moved from Charleston to Savannah, the location of the firm's main office. In 1988, he joined J.C. Bradford & Company as a partner and established its Savannah office. His integrity and enthusiasm for the financial markets made him a role model and mentor to many who were starting their careers in the industry; and

Whereas, Mr. Moore served on the board of the Securities Industry Association and was vice president of its Southern District from 1981 to 1986. He also served on the Regional Firms Advisory Committee of the New York Stock Exchange and continued other activities related to his profession until his retirement from the securities industry in 1999; and

Whereas, as a man who believed in committed involvement with his community, he was an active supporter and member of many social and nonprofit organizations in both South Carolina and Georgia, including the Society of Colonial Wars and the Historical Society in both states, the Telfair Museum of Art, and Gibbes Art Gallery in Charleston. A board member of the University of Virginia Alumni Association and Jefferson Scholars Foundation, he endowed a Jefferson Scholarship, which enables a deserving student from Savannah or the South Carolina Lowcountry to attend the University of Virginia; and

Whereas, Mr. Moore, an accomplished sportsman, was most dedicated to organizations that promote land and wildlife conservation, with a particular interest in preserving the natural beauty of the Lowcountry. He donated a conservation easement to the South Carolina Lowcountry Open Land Trust and to the United States Natural Resources Conservation Service to preserve permanently the wildlife habitat and wetlands of Davant Plantation, his Gillisonville home. He served on the board of the South Carolina chapter of the Nature Conservancy and was named Jasper County's Conservationist of the Year in 2007; and

Whereas, he leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Elfrida Barrow Moore; daughters Elfrida Moore Raley, Emma Moore Roddey, and Eleanor Moore Kuhl; seven grandchildren; and a host of other family members and friends. He will be greatly missed. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Benjamin Huger Rutledge Moore of Jasper County, and extend the deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Elfrida Moore for the family.
