A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE MR. DON HERRIOTT OF FLORENCE COUNTY, HEAD OF ROCHE GLOBAL CHEMICAL MANUFACTURING, UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT, AND TO WISH HIM MUCH HAPPINESS AND FULFILLMENT IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate note with appreciation the career of Mr. Don Herriott of Florence County, who will retire in October 2009 as Head of Roche Global Chemical Manufacturing; and

Whereas, Roche Global Chemical Manufacturing is part of Roche Holdings, headquartered in Basel, Switzerland; and

Whereas, Mr. Herriott received a B.S. degree in Physics with honors and distinction from Sonoma State University of California and was named a distinguished alumnus in 2003. He began his career in the banking industry in San Francisco; and

Whereas, in 1981 he joined SYNTEX, an international pharmaceutical company, where he held key management positions in information technology, manufacturing, engineering, global telecommunications, and corporate logistics at Palo Alto, California and Boulder, Colorado locations; and

Whereas, following the 1994 SYNTEX acquisition by Roche, Mr. Herriott transferred to Springfield, Missouri as head of an agribusiness manufacturing plant. A year later, he moved to Boulder, Colorado as an international Project Director responsible for global projects in Europe, North America, and the Caribbean Islands; and

Whereas, Mr. Herriott came to Florence, South Carolina in 1996, as President and General Manager of Roche Carolina. In 2004, he was named Head of Roche Global Chemical Manufacturing, responsible for the operations at its pharmaceutical manufacturing sites in South Carolina, Colorado, Switzerland, Ireland, and Germany. He is based in Florence, South Carolina; and

Whereas, Mr. Herriott currently serves as a board member of the South Carolina Board of Economic Advisors, the Palmetto Institute, New Carolina (SC Council on Competitiveness), South Carolina Research Authority, and MUSC's Hollings Cancer Center Advisory board. He chairs the University of South Carolina Research Campus Foundation and co-chairs New Carolina's Education Task Force. He has served on the Board of Trustees for Allen University, Coker College, and the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics and was a board member for the Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce. He is past chair of the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce and was the founding chair of The School Foundation for Florence District One. He also chaired the Governor's Workforce Education Task Force, which ultimately led to passage of the 2005 Education and Economic Development Act and serves on its Coordinating Council; and

Whereas, additional awards and honors include: (    2001) Business Person of the Year by S.C. Career Guidance and Placement Association; (2002) Barbara H. James Award - 2020 Vision Pacesetter; (2002) Led the initiative for TeacherSConnect, a program to equip Florence Public School District One with laptops and provide training for teachers to use as teaching tools; (2003) Barbara H. James Award - 2020 Vision Pacesetter; (2003) South Carolina Ambassador for Economic Development Award by Governor Sanford; (2003) Presidents' Award by S.C. Chapter of NSPRA; (2004) South Carolina Business Leader of the Year Award by the SC Chamber of Commerce; (2004) Honorary Doctorate of Human Letters by Coker College; (2005) Ashpy Lowrimore Community Service Award Outstanding Community Leadership by United Way; (2006) Charles Townes Award for Support of Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education by South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics; and (2006) Honorary Chairperson for the UNCF Gala by the Pee Dee Chapter of the United Negro College Fund; and

Whereas, the South Carolina Senate is grateful for the leadership of Mr. Don Herriott, and the members take much pleasure in joining with the citizens of Florence County in extending to him best wishes as he begins a well deserved retirement. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, congratulate Mr. Don Herriott of Florence County, Head of Roche Global Chemical Manufacturing, upon the occasion of his retirement, and to wish him much happiness and fulfillment in all his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Don Herriott.
