A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE THE CARDINAL NEWMAN HIGH SCHOOL MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAMS UPON WINNING THE 2011 SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS ASSOCIATION STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES.

Whereas, the Cardinal soccer teams of Cardinal Newman High School in Columbia concluded the 2011 season in impressive fashion by clinching the South Carolina Independent Schools Association (SCISA) state championships on May 14, 2011; and

Whereas, the Cardinal Newman men's team claimed a record of twenty-five wins and five losses, including tournament wins against AAA State Champion Eastside and AAAA State Champion Wando before taking down the seven-time state champion Pinewood Prep 3-0 in the state championship match; and

Whereas, the Cardinal Newman women's team claimed an impressive record of nineteen wins against only two losses capturing their third consecutive Region Championship before earning a hard fought victory over defending state champion Pinewood Prep 2-1 in the championship match; and

Whereas, the Cardinal men, behind the leadership of Head Coach Will Eudy, are commended for regrouping after a heartbreaking loss in the 2010 championship game and three consecutive losses to start the 2011 campaign before putting together a sixteen game winning streak that culminated in achieving their ultimate goal; and

Whereas, the Lady Cardinals, under the tutelage of Head Coach Steve Berzins, were a model of consistent excellence throughout the season; demonstrating outstanding teamwork and determination while tallying one impressive win after another; and

Whereas, both teams also won the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's Team Academic Award in 2011 - a first for the women's team and a fourth consecutive award for the men's team. Cardinal Newman School fielded the only SCISA team to earn this distinction; and

Whereas, the Cardinals were ably guided by Head Coach Will Eudy, Associate Head Coach Benjie Poston, and assistant coaches Jonathan Patterson, Andrew Richardson, and Matt Winstead. The Lady Cardinals were led by Head Coach Steve Berzins, assistant coaches Jim Marczesky, Lisa Millard, and Kathleen Pollard, and team manager Annaliese Marczesky; and

Whereas, the Lady Cardinal team members are Molly Rainwater, Alexa Barnes, Ashley Brown, Katherine Nahigian, Sarah Jackman, Meghan Gasser, Julie Davies, Kelsey Leonard, Sophie Cobb, Andrea Martin, Mary Katherine Hall, Catherine Onate, Nicole Onate, Ali Black, Savannah Bacon, Rebecca Brown, Elizabeth Hayden, Meredith Peter, and Caroline Gasse; and

Whereas, the Cardinal men's team includes Patrick Allen, Jacob August, William Ballou, Jono Cleary, Michael Collins, Timmy Cunningham, Griffen Darby, Mike Hodaly, Bradley Hollingsworth, Nestor Jaramillo, Christian Kirol, Kyle Maitland, Cole McCarter, Koty Millard, Nick Palevich, Patrick Nieri, Pennington Nieri, Cam Parker, Sebastian Quintero, Paul Anthony Raad, Jack Sicker, Austin Schulte, Charlie Terreni, Thomas Touma, Andrew Wilczewski, Thomas Wilczewski, and Jake Wilson; and

Whereas, the Cardinals have brought great pride and recognition to their school and community, and the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are proud to recognize and honor these athletes, their coaches, parents, and the officials of Cardinal Newman School for these outstanding achievements. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize, honor, and welcome to the South Carolina State House the Cardinal Newman High School men's and women's soccer teams and congratulate them upon winning the 2011 South Carolina Independent Schools Association State Championship titles.
