A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR DR. DAVID MORROW, DIRECTOR OF THE MOREHOUSE COLLEGE GLEE CLUB, AND TO COMMEND HIM FOR A LONG AND REMARKABLE CAREER IN MUSIC EDUCATION AND PERFORMANCE.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are pleased to learn that the Dr. David Morrow will be directing the celebrated Morehouse College Glee Club at Reedy River Missionary Baptist Church in Mauldin on April 16, 2011; and

Whereas, a native of Rochester, New York, and valedictorian and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Morehouse College in 1980, Dr. David Morrow earned a master's degree from the University of Michigan and a doctorate from the University of Cincinnati Music Conservatory; and

Whereas, he joined the music faculty of his alma mater at Morehouse College in 1981 and eventually succeeded his illustrious mentor, Dr. Wendell P. Whalum, as director of the Morehouse Glee Club; and

Whereas, he also serves as the director of the Wendell P. Whalum Community Chorus, co-director of the Morehouse-Spelman Chorus, and the artistic director and conductor of the Atlanta Singers; and

Whereas, Dr. Morrow has led the nationally renowned and internationally acclaimed Morehouse Glee Club on international tours; for funerals and memorials of civil-rights icons and of Morehouse presidents and faculty members; on television and broadcast recordings for CBS, ABC, PBS, The Cosby Show, and RCA Studios; with award-winning actors and actresses, Grammy-winning singers, and other celebrities; and for Spike Lee's 2008 film, Miracle at St. Anna; and

Whereas, a sought-after lecturer, workshop conductor, and clinician, he serves as president of the National Association of Negro Musicians, on the board of directors of the Intercollegiate Men's Choruses, and as a member of Chorus America, the Georgia Music Educators Association, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and is a "Friend of the Arts" member of Sigma Alpha Iota; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly enthusiastically applaud the melodious opus produced by the life and career of Dr. David Morrow and welcome him and the renowned glee club from Morehouse College to the Palmetto State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor Dr. David Morrow, director of the Morehouse College Glee Club, and commend him for a long and remarkable career in music education and performance.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. David Morrow.
