A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE SOUTHSIDE HIGH SCHOOL FORENSIC TEAM OF GREENVILLE COUNTY FOR A PRIZEWINNING YEAR, AND TO CONGRATULATE THE TEAM MEMBERS AND COACH ERICKSON BYNUM FOR THEIR DISTINGUISHED PERFORMANCE IN GARNERING THE 2011 CLASS AAA OVERALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to learn that the Southside High School forensic team has taken top honors in the state forensic competition for the third consecutive year; and

Whereas, in another stunning display of oratory skill, the Southside Tigers defeated the forensic teams from Riverside and Hillcrest high schools and Bob Jones Academy to win yet another state title; and

Whereas, the team also won the South Carolina National Forensic League District Championship for the fourth year in a row, and team captain Paavan Gami won the South Carolina Student of the Year award; and

Whereas, team members Andrew Bell and Blair Brewer took top honors at the state championship in public-forum debate; Paavan Gami won the state championships in both international and United States extemporaneous speaking; and David Wu won the state title in Lincoln Douglas debate; and

Whereas, under the skillful leadership of Erickson Bynum, a 1996 graduate from Southside High School who participated on the forensic team for four years under the team's founder, Truman Humbert, the school's current team is ranked eighty-seventh out of the three thousand forensic teams nationwide; and

Whereas, after graduating from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, Coach Bynum returned to teach English at his high school alma mater, and this year he will receive his first diamond award for outstanding coaching and dedication to forensic competition at the national competition; and

Whereas, qualifying to participate in the National Forensic League "Denim and Diamonds" National Tournament to be held from June 13-18 in Dallas, Texas, nine students on the team have the opportunity to attend: Andrew Bell, Blair Brewer, Sarina Dodhia, Paavan Gami, Anurag Khandavalli, Aahil Merchant, Abhi Pandya, Anand Shah, and Francine Tamakloe; and

Whereas, in a discipline that requires hours of intense practice and preparation, the Southside High School forensic team members have brought great pride and recognition to their community and their school, and the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives will expect to hear of the successes of these talented and dedicated students in the future. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Southside High School forensic team of Greenville County for a prizewinning year, and congratulate the team members and Coach Erickson Bynum for their distinguished performance in garnering the 2011 Class AAA Overall State Championship title.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Carlos Brooks and Coach Erickson Bynum.
