A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR LEROY MARTIN FOR HIS YEARS OF DEVOTED SERVICE TO THE CITIZENS OF THE CITY OF MCCORMICK AS CHIEF OF POLICE.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to express their sincere appreciation to dedicated public servants, such as former McCormick Chief of Police LeRoy Martin; and

Whereas, born in McCormick on December 22, 1955, LeRoy Martin volunteered to serve in the United States Army in 1974 upon his graduation from McCormick High School; and

Whereas, after three years of distinguished military service, he returned to McCormick in 1977 to serve as a police officer with the City of McCormick Police Department, and at that time, he volunteered for the United States Army National Guard; and

Whereas, in 1978, he graduated from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, and in 1979, he graduated from Piedmont Technical College with an associate degree in criminal justice; and

Whereas, he was promoted to sergeant with the City of McCormick Police Department in 1981 and served as assistant chief of police; and

Whereas, in 1982, he graduated from the South Carolina United States Army National Guard Academy with the rank of sergeant, and he earned another degree from Piedmont Technical College in public service; and

Whereas, he was appointed chief of police for the City of McCormick in 1998, but he answered his country's call to serve in Iraq when his National Guard unit was mobilized and deployed in 2003; and

Whereas, from February 2003 to March 2004, Sergeant Martin served his country with distinction in Iraq and was awarded the United States Achievement/Accommodation Medal, the Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in Iraq; and

Whereas, he spent more than two years from 2004 to 2006 at Fort Gordon Army Hospital, recuperating from injuries sustained during his service in Iraq; and

Whereas, on May 6, 2006, he was retired from the United States Army due to those injuries, and on July 10, 2006, he returned to his post as chief of police for the City of McCormick; and

Whereas, he retired as chief of police on January 22, 2010, due to the injuries he sustained in Iraq, but he remains full of faith and hope in his God and was ordained to serve as a deacon on June 6, 2010, at Mount Lebanon Baptist Church where he and his beloved wife, Peggy, worship; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are deeply indebted to former City of McCormick Chief of Police LeRoy Martin and are grateful for the faithful and unswerving service he has given to the citizens of the Palmetto State and to our nation. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor LeRoy Martin for his years of devoted service to the citizens of the City of McCormick as chief of police.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to former Chief of Police LeRoy Martin.
