A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE PRODUCER EUGENE WASHINGTON OF COLUMBIA FOR HIS WORK ON THE FILM DOCUMENTARY LAKEVIEW, BOOKER & JOHNSON: THE HALLOWED HALLS AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM ON THE FILM'S RELEASE, SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 30 AND JULY 1, 2012.

Whereas, the House of Representatives is pleased to learn that producer Eugene Washington of Columbia has completed his work on the film documentary Lakeview, Booker & Johnson: The Hallowed Halls and that he will have the pleasure of presenting it on June 30 and July 1, 2012; and

Whereas, an accomplished theatrical artist, Mr. Washington has written and produced four major stage plays, his proudest being the Modjeska Simpkins Story. In 2009, he authored the book Love Has Everything to Do With It, which challenges men to become advocates against domestic violence. This summer, he looks forward to presenting a crowning artistic achievement, the highly anticipated Lakeview, Booker & Johnson: The Hallowed Halls; and

Whereas, the documentary focuses on the history of three African-American schools, Booker T. Washington High School, established in Columbia in 1916; Lakeview High School, founded in West Columbia in 1925 (of which Gene Washington is an appreciative graduate); and C.A. Johnson High School, launched in Columbia in 1948. In spite of the understaffing and underfunding from which they perpetually suffered, these institutions earned the respect of their surrounding communities as warehouses of wisdom and repositories of fine instruction for students of Richland and Lexington counties; and

Whereas, the teachers and administrators of these institutions molded students into model citizens who have impacted the Palmetto State in countless positive ways. Having learned from their instructors that service to mankind is primary among their duties in life, students departed those hallowed halls to serve; and

Whereas, as a result, the Lakeview Tigers, Booker T. Washington Golden Tornadoes, and C.A. Johnson Green Hornets remain invaluable assets to South Carolina, and her sister states; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives, therefore, takes great pleasure in recognizing Gene Washington and Lakeview, Booker & Johnson: The Hallowed Halls, which documents in film the venerable history of these schools. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize producer Eugene Washington of Columbia for his work on the film documentary Lakeview, Booker & Johnson: The Hallowed Halls and congratulate him on the film's release, scheduled for June 30 and July 1, 2012.

Be it further resolved that copies of this resolution be provided to Gene Washington of Gene Washington Productions and representatives of Booker T. Washington High School, Lakeview High School, and C.A. Johnson High School.
