COMMITTEE REPORT
June 2, 2011
S. 949
S. Printed 6/2/11--H.
Read the first time June 1, 2011.
To whom was referred a Concurrent Resolution (S. 949) to request that the Department of Transportation name the proposed highway in Horry County that will begin at Harrelson Boulevard and end at Farrow Parkway, etc., respectfully
That they have duly and carefully considered the same and recommend that the same do pass:
LISTON D. BARFIELD for Committee.
TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE PROPOSED HIGHWAY IN HORRY COUNTY THAT WILL BEGIN AT HARRELSON BOULEVARD AND END AT FARROW PARKWAY "FRED NASH MEMORIAL BOULEVARD" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS ALONG THIS ROAD THAT CONTAIN THE WORDS "FRED NASH MEMORIAL BOULEVARD".
Whereas, Mr. Fred Nash distinguished himself by his heroism involving voluntary risk of life on August 18, 1958, when he observed an Air Force T-33 aircraft crash land and burst into flames at the Myrtle Beach State Park; and
Whereas, despite the danger associated with the possibility of the aircraft's fuel cells exploding and without the benefit of protective clothing or fire extinguishing agents, Mr. Nash rushed to the burning aircraft to render assistance to its crew; and
Whereas, although he sustained serious injuries, Mr. Nash persevered in his efforts until he succeeded in leading an injured Air Force officer to safety where he extinguished the flames on the victim's body; and
Whereas, Mr. Nash received the United States Air Force Exceptional Service Award in Recognition of Distinguished Patriotic Service in April of 1959; and
Whereas, it would be fitting and proper to forever recognize Mr. Nash's courage and bravery by naming a highway in Horry County in his honor. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly request that the Department of Transportation name the proposed highway in Horry County that will begin at Harrelson Boulevard and end at Farrow Parkway "Fred Nash Memorial Boulevard" and erect appropriate markers or signs along this highway that contain the words "Fred Nash Memorial Boulevard".
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
