A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE THE 2011 SKILLSUSA WINNERS OF SCHOOL DISTRICT FIVE OF LEXINGTON AND RICHLAND COUNTIES FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE AT THE STATE SKILLSUSA AND LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina are pleased to learn that School District Five of Lexington and Richland counties boasted several winners at the State SkillsUSA and Leadership Conference held at the Carolina First Center in Greenville from March 31 - April 2, 2011; and

Whereas, representing Dutch Fork and Irmo High Schools, twenty students competed with hundreds of other high school and college students in trade, technical, and skilled-service profession instructional programs to demonstrate their ability at the state competition for SkillsUSA; and

Whereas, six students from Irmo High School and one from Dutch Fork took first place in the chapter business procedure/Roberts Rules of Order, the team's twenty-fourth consecutive year as state champions; and Glenn Ripon of Irmo took first place in automotive collision refinishing. These seven first-place winners will represent South Carolina later this year at the national competition in Kansas City, Missouri; and

Whereas, three students from Irmo comprised the second-place team in chapter display; Tourez Watson of Dutch Fork took second place in automotive collision repair, and Tyler Chambers of Irmo took that division's sixth place; and

Whereas, Antonio Lazaro from Irmo High won eighth place in automotive collision refinishing, and Ryan Chapman of Dutch Fork High took eighth place in automotive service technology; and

Whereas, James Talley of Irmo High took third place in carpentry while Dustin Jinkins and Josh Szewczak both of Irmo took fourth and seventh places respectively in residential wiring/electricity; and

Whereas, Chelsey Metzar and Talia Gomez won fourth and sixth places respectively in prepared speech, and Peter Sherman of Dutch Fork took sixth-place honors in job interview; and

Whereas, Phil Tanner, Irmo High School instructor and advisor to the School District Five team, was named the 2011 South Carolina SkillsUSA Advisor of the Year; and

Whereas, using his own skills and training, Advisor Tanner forged these students into champions and taught these young competitors lessons that will prove invaluable to them throughout life; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are grateful for the pride and recognition that the SkillsUSA winners of School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties have brought to their schools and communities and are pleased to have this opportunity to commend such an outstanding group of young people. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and congratulate the 2011 SkillsUSA winners of School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties for their outstanding performance at the State SkillsUSA and Leadership Conference.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Phil Tanner, instructor and SkillsUSA advisor for School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties.
