A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE TRAVELERS REST HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS TENNIS TEAM, COACHES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR WINNING THE 2013 CLASS AAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.

Whereas, the South Carolina Senate is pleased to learn that the members of the Travelers Rest High School girls tennis team of Greenville County took top honors at the state competition at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center on Saturday, November 9, 2013; and

Whereas, in a close match the entire afternoon, the Travelers Rest Lady Devildogs took the court against the lower state champions from Myrtle Beach High School; and

Whereas, the Lady Devildogs rebounded from a 3-2 deficit to the Myrtle Beach Lady Seahawks after singles play to win both doubles matches and claim the championship trophy; and

Whereas, Travelers Rest took a 2-0 lead when sophomore Makenna Jones, playing in the number one spot, won her first two games 6-0, 6-0, and senior Sara McBride, in the number two singles spot, took her match 6-2, 6-4; and

Whereas, after singles play, the Lady Seahawks entered the doubles play with a 3-2 advantage over Travelers Rest; and

Whereas, Makenna Jones and sophomore Emma Reaney in the number one doubles team took the first set 6-0 and the second set 6-4 to tie the overall match 3-3; and

Whereas, Sara McBride and senior Meade Inglis as the number two doubles team also won their first set and battled to win their second set 6-4 to secure the first-ever state championship for the Lady Devildogs and complete their season with a 20-2 record; and

Whereas, in a sport that demands strength, speed, and agility, Head Coach Kirby Alford and his skilled coaching staff capitalized on their own athletic ability and training to mold a championship team and teach these athletes lessons that will prove invaluable through life both on and off the court; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate appreciate the recognition that the Travelers Rest High School tennis players have brought to their school and their community and look to hear of their continued accomplishments in the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Travelers Rest High School girls tennis team, coaches, and school officials for an outstanding season and congratulate them for winning the 2013 Class AAA State Championship title.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Lou Lavely and Coach Kirby Alford.
