A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE C. A. JOHNSON HIGH SCHOOL BOYS VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM, COACHES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR WINNING THE 2014 CLASS A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.

Whereas, the South Carolina Senate is pleased to learn that the members of the C. A. Johnson basketball team of Richland County took top honors at the state competition at the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia on Saturday, March 8, 2014; and

Whereas, led by eight seniors who have played together for the past six years, the C.A. Johnson Hornets fought back from an 18-point deficit to defeat Whale Branch High School 71-64 in overtime; and

Whereas, the Hornets entered the championship game with a 19-8 season, pitted against the Whale Branch Warriors with a 23-5 season; and

Whereas, trailing the Warriors by as much as 18 points in the first half, C. A. Johnson remained down 41-32 at the half, but a rally from the Hornets in the second half gave their competitors a stinging blow; and

Whereas, the last eight minutes of regulation play saw five lead changes and ended with the Hornets and the Warriors forced into overtime; and

Whereas, C. A. Johnson leveled Whale Branch 12-5 in the extra period for a final score of 71-64, the first time the Hornets have captured the state title since 1989 when the school played in the Class AAA; and

Whereas, although the Warriors were relentless in rebounding, taking 40 to C. A. Johnson's 31, the Hornets punished Whale Branch with 25 steals and scored 37 points off of 36 total game turnovers; and

Whereas, senior guard for the Hornets, Michael Knox, led the team in scoring with 23 points and 9 rebounds while classmates Ben Holmes and Peter Goodman each posted 13 points, and fellow senior William Tobe finished with 6 points and 8 rebounds; and

Whereas, in a sport that demands strength, agility, and accuracy, Head Coach Daryl Jarvis and his skilled coaching staff capitalized on their own athletic ability and training to forge a championship team and teach these athletes lessons that will prove invaluable through life both on and off court; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate appreciate the pride and recognition that the C. A. Johnson basketball players have brought to their school and their community and look to hear of their continued accomplishments in the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize and honor the C. A. Johnson High School boys varsity basketball team, coaches, and school officials for an outstanding season and congratulate them for winning the 2014 Class A State Championship title.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Nathan White and Coach Daryl Jarvis. .
