A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR FRED MEDA AS "THE GODFATHER" OF GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENTS IN MYRTLE BEACH AND THROUGHOUT SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are pleased to commend Fred Meda for the significant impact he has had as "The Godfather" of golf course superintendents in Myrtle Beach and throughout the State; and

Whereas, for more than thirty years, Fred Meda has contributed his expertise to elevating the standards of golf course preparation and conditioning in South Carolina, for which the State's more than three hundred fifty courses are now internationally acclaimed; and

Whereas, universally recognized by his peers as "The Godfather" of golf course maintenance in Myrtle Beach, he set the bar high in helping the Grand Strand grow from some two dozen courses to more than one hundred courses, greatly benefiting the State economy; and

Whereas, for a period spanning four decades, he commanded the single greatest responsibility of any golf course superintendent in the area, overseeing three courses when he started with the Myrtle Beach National Company in 1977 and eventually ten courses by the time he left the company in 2004; and

Whereas, since 2004, he has continued to be active in the golf industry as the owner of a golf course and as a highly sought consultant sharing his extensive personal knowledge and expertise to numerous superintendents; and

Whereas, his mentoring introduced many future leaders within the golf course superintendent profession, including Tim Moraghan, who served more than two decades as the United States Golf Association's director of championship agronomy; and

Whereas, he has generously shared his knowledge without reservation as an invited speaker at meetings and conferences both in the Carolinas and across the country; and

Whereas, he helped to establish the Palmetto Golf Course Superintendents Association and served as the president of the Carolinas Golf Course Superintendents Association in 1981, the largest regional organization of its kind in the country; and

Whereas, in 1991, he was honored by the Carolinas Golf Course Superintendents Association as Superintendent of the Year, and in 2012, he received the association's highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly appreciate the considerable impact that the dedicated work of Fred Meda has had on the golfing industry in particular and on tourism in general throughout the Palmetto State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor Fred Meda as "The Godfather" of golf course superintendents in Myrtle Beach and throughout South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Fred Meda.
