A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE DR. MILDRED MCCLAIN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF HARAMBEE HOUSE/CITIZENS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE, ON BEING HONORED BY THE 2013 NATIONAL BROWNFIELDS CONFERENCE ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE CAUCUS FOR HER STEADFAST COMMITMENT TO ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE.

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that in May 2013 Dr. Mildred McClain, executive director of Harambee House/Citizens for Environmental Justice, will be honored by the 2013 National Brownfields Conference Environmental Justice Caucus for her steadfast commitment to environmental justice. In addition, the Environmental Protection Agency will release a video of Dr. McClain as part of its 20th Anniversary of Environmental Justice Video Series; and

Whereas, the National Brownfields Conference, now in its fifteenth year, seeks to cover the A to Z's of redevelopment and touch on other topics related to sustainability. The event attracts those interested in restoring brownfields (abandoned or underused industrial and commercial facilities available for reuse) who also desire to revitalize their communities, spur economic growth, restore the environment, and protect the public health; and

Whereas, a teacher by love and choice, Dr. Mildred McClain has several decades of teaching and organizing experience and has served as executive director of Harambee House/Citizens for Environmental Justice for many years. She is also the founder of the Black Youth Leadership Development Institute; and

Whereas, as an environmental justice organizer, Dr. McClain has traveled extensively throughout the United States and abroad, advocating for environmental justice neighborhood by neighborhood. She served as an official community-based organization delegate of the World Conference Against Racism and the World Summit on Sustainable Development, both held in South Africa. She presented testimony to the Commission on Human Rights in Geneva, Switzerland; and

Whereas, she is a leading activist on issues related to nuclear weapons production, transportation of nuclear waste, nonproliferation, and public participation in the decision-making processes of military and federal facilities. Dr. McClain served as co-chair of Congressman James Clyburn's National Environmental Policy Commission for four years. Named a Bannerman Fellow, she also received the Keystone Award for Leadership in the area of environmental justice; and

Whereas, realizing the great importance of protecting our environment for future generations of Americans, the South Carolina House of Representatives wishes to express its appreciation of Dr. Mildred McClain, wish her much success as she continues her fine work, and congratulate her on this latest honor, recognition by the 2013 National Brownfields Conference Environmental Justice Caucus. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Dr. Mildred McClain, executive director of Harambee House/Citizens for Environmental Justice, on being honored by the 2013 National Brownfields Conference Environmental Justice Caucus for her steadfast commitment to environmental justice.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Dr. Mildred McClain.
