A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE HONORABLE PHIL LEVENTIS OF SUMTER ON RECEIVING THE 2013 GREATER SUMTER CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD AND TO THANK HIM FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF SERVICE TO SUMTER COUNTY AND THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA AS A SOUTH CAROLINA STATE SENATOR AND MANY OTHER LEADERSHIP POSITIONS.

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that the Honorable Phil Leventis of Sumter has been named recipient of the 2013 Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Achievement Award; and

Whereas, Senator Leventis, who retired in 2012 from the South Carolina State Senate after thirty-one years as a member of that body, has amassed an impressive record of service on behalf of the people of the Palmetto State, and on behalf of the citizens of Lee and Sumter Counties in District 35 in particular; and

Whereas, Phil Leventis firmly believes in active participation in his community and demonstrates that commitment through past and present service as a member of various organizations and boards. Among these are the Sumter Rotary Club (member more than thirty years, board member), County Airport Commission, Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce, American Legion Post 15, University of South Carolina School of Health Partnership Board, Sumter County Development Board, and Sumter National Bank (chairman and founding board member); and

Whereas, from 1993 to 2001 during his legislative service, Senator Leventis chaired the Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee, during which time he sought to protect our environment through his advocacy for land conservation, clean air and water, energy efficiency, recycling, green construction, alternative energy, and important related issues. Yet while he worked tirelessly on the big projects, he did not forget the needs of individual constituents; and

Whereas, for his own city, he was instrumental in making many projects a reality, such as the Continental Tire Plant's establishment in Sumter, the relocation of the Third Army to Shaw Air Force Base, and the consolidation of Sumter's two school districts into a single district; and

Whereas, before serving his community, Phil Leventis served his country, first as a fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force and then as a member of the South Carolina Air National Guard, from which he retired with the rank of brigadier general; and

Whereas, grateful for the legacy of consistent commitment and excellence Senator Phil Leventis has bestowed on the people of South Carolina, the House of Representatives takes great pleasure in saluting him on receiving this latest honor, the 2013 Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Achievement Award. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate the Honorable Phil Leventis of Sumter on receiving the 2013 Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Achievement Award and thank him for his many years of service to Sumter County and the State of South Carolina as a South Carolina State Senator and many other leadership positions.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to the Honorable Phil Leventis.
