A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE FORK SHOALS HISTORICAL SOCIETY FOR ITS VITAL ROLE IN PRESERVING THE HISTORY OF SOUTHERN GREENVILLE COUNTY.

Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly recognizes that the preservation and accurate portrayal of our history is critical to learning from that history and to understanding ourselves as a people. For this reason, the General Assembly is pleased to salute the Fork Shoals Historical Society for its fine work toward preserving the history of southern Greenville County; and

Whereas, one of southern Greenville County's first settlements in the late 1700s, Fork Shoals grew into a vibrant community of farmers, planters, mill owners, and mill workers who established churches, shops, and schools. The community boasts one of the first accredited rural high schools in the State as part of its history; and

Whereas, the Fork Shoals Historical Society, a nonprofit organization organized exclusively for charitable, literary, and educational purposes, is dedicated to preserving this proud history; and

Whereas, its purposes being to research, archive, preserve, publish, and promote its findings, the Fork Shoals Historical Society, in order to continue access of relevant historic information to future generations, published Fork Shoals (Images of America Series, Arcadia Publishers, Charleston, 2013), which consists of photographs and text describing all phases of life in this historic community; and

Whereas, the Fork Shoals Historical Society Board of Directors consists of Mrs. Tuffy Atkins, chair; Dr. Anne Peden, vice chair; Mrs. Cheryl Macknight, secretary; Mrs. Kathy Saxon, treasurer; and Mrs. Virginia Dean, committee chair. The board is assisted by approximately twenty active supporters. This dedicated group provides a much-needed service to the present citizens of southern Greenville County, as well as to their posterity. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Fork Shoals Historical Society for its vital role in preserving the history of southern Greenville County.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to the Fork Shoals Historical Society.
