A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE DR. PATRICIA WILSON WITHERSPOON OF RICHLAND COUNTY UPON BECOMING PRESIDENT OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA ACADEMY OF FAMILY PHYSICIANS FOR 2014-2015.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to learn that Dr. Patricia Wilson Witherspoon of Richland County will be installed as the 2014-2015 president of the South Carolina Academy of Family Physicians (SCAFP) on June 18, 2014; and

Whereas, in preparation for her life's work, Dr. Witherspoon earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, and her master's degree in biology from Pennsylvania State University. She then earned a doctor of medicine degree from Penn State College of Medicine. Following medical school, she completed a family practice residency at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia, serving as chief resident her final year. She subsequently became board certified (Diplomat) and a Fellow in family medicine; and

Whereas, after serving as a staff physician for three years with Richland Primary Care Association in Columbia, she accepted an appointment with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 1998, where she presently serves as Associate Professor of Family and Preventive Medicine; and

Whereas, during her tenure at the University of South Carolina, has served in a broad array of capacities, including service as a member of the investigation team at the South Carolina Rural Health Research Center in the office of Rural Health Policy and as a member of the South Carolina Cardiovascular Task Force, a subcommittee chair of the Tri-State Stroke Network. She currently serves as the interim medical director for the Family Medicine outpatient facility and the director of the Community Outreach and the Quality team; and

Whereas, deeply committed to her community, Dr. Witherspoon is an active member of the South Carolina Medical Association, a participant in the Doctor of the Day program at the South Carolina State House, and is a member of the volunteer physician work force at the Columbia Free Clinic and the Good Samaritan Clinic; and

Whereas, she is also an active member of SCAFP, a constituent chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians founded in 1949 to promote and maintain high quality standards for family doctors who are uniquely trained and qualified to treat up to ninety percent of all medical conditions and to care for all family members. With approximately one thousand four hundred members, SCAFP is the state's largest primary care medical specialty society; and

Whereas, Dr. Witherspoon has served as a member of the SCAFP executive officers as the association's 2012-2013 secretary and treasurer, and will serve as president of this distinguished group for 2014-2015; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives appreciates the outstanding medical service that Dr. Patricia Witherspoon has rendered to the citizens of our State, and the members honor her upon her installation as the 2014-2015 president of SCAFP. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Dr. Patricia Wilson Witherspoon of Richland County upon becoming president of the South Carolina Academy of Family Physicians for 2014-2015.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Dr. Patricia Wilson Witherspoon.
