A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON THE PASSING OF LEONARD PRICE OF KERSHAW AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Leonard Lee Price of Kershaw on June 2, 2013, at the venerable age of ninety-two; and

Whereas, Mr. Price, a businessman, devoted family man, and lifelong philanthropist, was born in Gilbert on October 15, 1920, to Adam and Alma Price. He absorbed the ethic that if you are blessed, you must serve your fellow man. With a quiet demeanor, he demonstrated an extraordinarily generous spirit toward many institutions and individuals over the course of his long life; and

Whereas, in preparation for his career, Leonard Price worked his way through Bowen's Business College in Columbia. Armed with a two-year accounting degree, he served as an accountant at L.I. Guion Farms in Lugoff, later working as a civilian clerk at Fort Jackson. After serving on active duty with the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1944, he began a sales career that eventually led him to a long tenure as CEO of various Anheuser Busch distributorships in North and South Carolina. He retired in 2000, concluding a successful fifty-six-year business career; and

Whereas, Mr. Price served as a Columbia College trustee from 2003 to 2010 and donated more than one million dollars to the school, working closely with former Columbia College President Caroline Whitson both during and after his time as a trustee. He hosted an annual fundraiser for the school at his 4,500-acre estate, North Camden Plantation in Kershaw County, and brought the Columbia institution many new donors; and

Whereas, high among his philanthropic efforts for Columbia College stands the Leonard Price Athletic Pavilion, which allowed the expansion of Columbia College's soccer program and the creation of a softball program and lacrosse program. For his longtime faithful support, in 2011 he was awarded the Columbia College Medallion, the school's highest honor; and

Whereas, Mr. Price was a supporter of dozens of other organizations, as well. In 2012, for instance, the Kershaw County School Board recognized him for his donation of twenty-five acres of land to the school district. His contributions also extended to the local police force. Almost fifty years ago, he donated the first dog to the Richland County Sheriff's Department's K-9 Unit, and he recently bought a new dog for the unit when one of its dogs was killed; and

Whereas, also in 2012, the Kershaw County Sheriff's Foundation Board of Directors established the Leonard Price Friend of Law Enforcement Award for Mr. Price to honor his strong support of law enforcement; and

Whereas, because of his lifelong belief in the value of education, instilled in him as a boy by his teacher mother, he contributed funds to renovate the Palmetto Collegiate Institute and gardens in Lexington in her memory. He also contributed to the University of South Carolina's College of Nursing and School of Library and Information Science, Gilbert High School, Camden Military Academy, and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and hosted Boy Scout jamborees on his plantation; and

Whereas, as a man of practical wisdom, Leonard Price never just gave money away; rather, he expected organizations to meet him halfway. For instance, after he agreed to donate new cleats to North Central High School's football team, the players agreed to send their old cleats to Africa; and

Whereas, Mr. Price, believing in hands-on involvement, gave countless hours of volunteer service to numerous organizations. A life member of the Columbia Optimist Club, he was a founding member of the Columbia Community Relations Council, former president of the Columbia Urban League, first president of Crime Stoppers of the Midlands, and a board member of the Babcock Center, Federation of the Blind, and Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce; and

Whereas, Leonard Price's heart lived in his fields, woodlands, and ponds. He was an enthusiastic outdoorsman who enjoyed the pleasure of owning a place where family and friends could find good hunting and fishing and view an abundance of wildlife. His North Camden Plantation, managed for turkey, ducks, dove, and deer, features a one-hundred-acre shooting preserve for quail hunting; and

Whereas, preceded in death by his first wife, Marjorie Kay Harmon; his second wife, Jewell Kathryn Hornsby; and his granddaughter, Sarah Kathryn Stitt, Mr. Price leaves to cherish his memory his daughters, Marjorie Kay Price Phillips, Harriet Lenora (Nonie) Price, Kathryn (Kathy) Lee Price Stitt, and Susan Elizabeth (Beth) Price Tisdale; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. He will be greatly missed. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Leonard Price of Kershaw and extend the deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Marjorie Kay Price Phillips for the family.
