A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR COACH CURTIS FRYE, HEAD COACH OF TRACK AND FIELD AND CROSS COUNTRY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND TO COMMEND HIM UPON HIS INDUCTION INTO THE UNITED STATES TRACK & FIELD AND CROSS COUNTRY COACHES ASSOCIATION HALL OF FAME.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are pleased to learn that Curtis Frye, head track and field and cross country coach at the University of South Carolina, was inducted into the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame in December 2013; and

Whereas, entering his eighteenth season as head coach, Coach Frye has established a program that is regarded as one of the nation's most elite. He has coached or overseen more than sixty NCAA champions, 115 SEC champions, and more than 435 NCAA All Americans; and

Whereas, he brought South Carolina its first team NCAA championship in any sport when his women's team captured the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Championship crown. One of the most well-respected coaches in the country, during his seventeen years at USC Coach Frye has coached an SEC champion in all but one season and a national champion in all but four seasons; and

Whereas, he was named the 1997 United States Olympic Committee Track & Field Coach of the Year, earned the prestigious Nike Coach of the Year award in 2001, and is a three-time SEC Coach of the Year, the latter honors coinciding with his three women's outdoor conference championships in 1999, 2002, and 2005; and

Whereas, Coach Frye is a three-time United States Track Coaches Association National Coach of the Year, as well as the first person in the history of the United States Track Coaches Association to win the award for indoors and outdoors in the same year; and

Whereas, in addition to his success on the track and field, he has consistently produced champions in the classroom with four United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Scholar-Athletes of the Year and two SEC Scholar-Athletes of the Year; and

Whereas, in October 2008, he was honored with the Order of Ikkos Medallion, a special order reserved for the coach of an Olympic or Paralympic medalist and presented by the United States Olympic Committee. Coach Frye received the honor after coaching Jerome Singleton, Jr., to a silver medal in the men's 100-meter dash at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing; and

Whereas, over the course of his career he has coached 25 Olympians who have won 13 medals and was an assistant coach for the 2004 Team USA women's track team in Athens; and

Whereas, he recently traveled to Russia as the Team USA men's head coach for the World University Games in Kazan and then to Moscow as an assistant coach with the men's sprints and hurdles for the International Association of Athletics Federations World Championships, where his athletes medaled in every event of the meet, capturing three gold medals; and

Whereas, before taking the helm with the Gamecocks in 1996, he served as assistant head coach for the University of North Carolina for four years, an assistant coach at the University of Florida from 1988 to 1992, and an assistant coach for North Carolina State from 1984 to 1988, after serving at his East Carolina alma mater where he commenced his coaching career in 1974; and

Whereas, after losing his father to diabetes, Coach Frye established The Frye Foundation, which is dedicated to assisting those dealing with diabetes and mental illness. The foundation hosts an annual 5K run/walk as well as a golf tournament and silent auction; and

Whereas, together with his beloved wife, Wilma, he has reared three fine children: Crystal, C.J., and Curtrell; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are grateful for the legacy of excellence and compassion established by Coach Curtis Frye and congratulate him for his inclusion in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Coach Curtis Frye, head coach of track and field and of cross country at the University of South Carolina and commend him upon his induction into the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Coach Curtis Frye.
