A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND CONGRATULATE OAK GROVE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN LEXINGTON COUNTY UPON BEING NAMED A NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL.

Whereas, Oak Grove Elementary School in Lexington School District One was among five South Carolina schools named models of excellence by the U.S. Education Department in 2012; and

Whereas, Oak Grove Elementary was among roughly 300 winners nationwide, and like all award winners in this State, showed dramatic improvement in test scores, despite having at least forty percent of its students from disadvantaged backgrounds; and

Whereas, to be named a Blue Ribbon School is to join an elite group. Of more than 138,000 in the United States, just over 6,000 of America's schools have received this honor over the past twenty-eight years; and

Whereas, Oak Grove was also recognized with the Palmetto Gold Award for a high level of student performance and for making substantial progress in closing achievement gaps for the past three consecutive years; and

Whereas, award ceremonies were held in Washington. D.C. in November 2012 where the approximately 300 national winners received Blue Ribbon School flags and engraved plaques as symbols of their success; and

Whereas, Oak Grove will have this status forever of being a National Blue Ribbon School and the school will have a seal that will be placed on the wall at the front entrance to show this great award. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, honor and congratulate Oak Grove Elementary School upon being named a National Blue Ribbon School.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Oak Grove Elementary School.
