A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA DEFENSIVE END JADEVEON CLOWNEY FOR HIS OUTSTANDING SEASON, AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM FOR BEING NAMED THE 2012 AT&T NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE YEAR AND SEC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly were pleased to learn that Jadeveon Clowney was named the 2012 AT&T National Player of the Year and SEC Defensive Player of the Year; and

Whereas, a sophomore defensive end from Rock Hill, he finished the season with 54 total tackles, 23.5 tackles for loss, and a school record of 13 sacks; and

Whereas, the 6-foot-6, 256-pound player was a Unanimous First-Team All American this season, the winner of the Ted Hendricks Award as the nation's top defensive end, and ranked sixth overall in the 2012 Heisman Trophy voting; and

Whereas, in the Outback Bowl on New Year's Day with the University of Michigan facing off against the University of South Carolina, officials allowed the Michigan Wolverines to retain possession in a questionable fourth-quarter call that spotted the ball just short of a first down after a fourth-down fake punk; and

Whereas, on the next play of the game, Jadeveon Clowney separated Michigan running back Vincent Smith from the ball and from his helmet in one of the most physical, athletic, and vigorous plays in college football, "The Hit" being proudly dubbed by Carolina Gamecock admirers; and

Whereas, on the now famous play, Clowney blew past the left tackle, squared up the running back, tackled him emphatically, and then deftly scooped up the football in his left hand for the fumble recovery and ran with the ball; and

Whereas, after the Gamecocks regained possession, they needed only one more play to throw a touchdown pass, and after yet another touchdown in the final seconds of the fourth quarter, the Gamecocks defeated the Wolverines 33-28 in the Outback Bowl; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are grateful for the pride and recognition that Jadeveon Clowney has brought to the University of South Carolina and to the Palmetto State and look to hear of his continued accomplishments. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor University of South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney for his outstanding season, and congratulate him for being named the 2012 AT&T National Player of the Year and SEC Defensive Player of the Year.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Jadeveon Clowney.
