A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE THE SOUTH CAROLINA 4-H HORSE PROGRAM HORSE BOWL TEAM, ADVISORS AND 4-H OFFICIALS FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR WINNING THE 2015 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.

Whereas, 4-H is a community of young people across America who are learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills. The South Carolina 4-H Youth Development Program uses a learn-by-doing approach, the involvement of caring adults, and the knowledge and resources of Clemson University and the land grant university system to empower youth to become healthy, productive, and contributing members of society; and

Whereas, the national 4-H Horse Program has more than 260,000 participants, making it the largest of 4-H's animal-related programs; and

Whereas, seven youth participants in the South Carolina 4-H Horse Program won team and individual awards at the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup in Louisville, Kentucky, in November 2015 for the second year in a row; and

Whereas, South Carolina fielded seven youth in two contests-horse bowl and individual demonstration; and

Whereas, the Horse Bowl tests the youth's knowledge in horse breeds, anatomy, health, equipment, and equine management and the public speaking and individual demonstration contest presentations require youth to utilize their extensive horse knowledge and public speaking skills to affect an audience in a positive manner; and

Whereas, the Horse Bowl Team included Kristy Waldrep of Charleston, Hailey Mundell of Prosperity, Katherine Ellig of Columbia, Hannah Steele of Chester, and Aubrey Miller of Troy; and

Whereas, the team placed first overall and Waldrep was named Reserve Champion Individual and Hailey Mundell placed fourth highest individual; and

Whereas, those representing 4-H in the individual demonstration and public speaking contests included Ashtyn Kinney of Greenwood and Hannah McKinney of Charleston. McKinney placed eighth in the public speaking category; and

Whereas, this year's team was under the advisement of Melissa Brundage, Kristine Vernon, Katie Shaw, Bonnie Steele, and Billie Miller; and

Whereas, there are currently approximately 85,000 horses in South Carolina and the economic impact of the horse industry is approximately $478 million. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, congratulate the South Carolina 4-H Horse Program on winning the Horse Bowl Team 2015 National Championship title and recognize the team's hard work in making this an outstanding year.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the South Carolina 4-H Horse Program.
