VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE UPON THE PASSING OF MRS. ANNIE BELL FREEMAN PICKETT, AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the Senate were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Mrs. Annie Bell Freeman Pickett on June 11, 2016 at Lorien Health Care Rehabilitation Center in Columbia, Maryland; and
Whereas, Mrs. Pickett, born in Winnsboro on October 27, 1908 to the late Reverend Joshua Freeman and Elizabeth Coleman Freeman; and
Whereas, at an early age, Mrs. Pickett would travel with her father, a Baptist minister, as he preached at two different churches. She was a former member of St. Matthews First Baptist Church in Winnsboro, South Carolina; and
Whereas, Mrs. Pickett attended school in Fairfield County, but left school at an early age to work on her family's farm and to care for her younger siblings. Through this experience, she learned the value of hard work and dependability, traits she carried through her adult life; and
Whereas, Mrs. Pickett moved to New York as a young adult where she began to work as a domestic caretaker for children. Her stay in New York was short and within a few years she returned to South Carolina where she lived until her retirement; and
Whereas, Mrs. Pickett married the late Albert Pickett and the couple had three children: Marjorie (deceased), Albert, Jr. (deceased), and James; and
Whereas, Mrs. Pickett became a member of Ephesus Seventh-day Adventist Church in Columbia. As a member, she served as a deaconess and a member of the Dorcas Society for many years. She also enjoyed attending camp meetings and financially supporting the Ambassador Pathfinder Club, a youth organization in the church; and
Whereas, Mrs. Pickett experienced many things for the first time in her nineties. She received a passport for the first time at the age of ninety-five and took a cruise in the Caribbean. She also took her first airplane flight at the age of ninety-five, and flew solo at the age of ninety-nine; and
Whereas, the members of the Senate are grateful for the life and legacy of Mrs. Annie Bell Freeman Pickett and for the example of kindness she set for all who knew her. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, express the profound sorrow of the members of the South Carolina Senate upon the passing of Mrs. Annie Bell Freeman Pickett, and extend their deepest sympathy to her family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of Mrs. Annie Bell Freeman Pickett.
