A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR SC WHITMORE SCHOOL FOR THE SIGNIFICANT WORK OF EDUCATING STUDENTS ACROSS THE STATE WHO ARE SEEKING AN ALTERNATIVE LEARNING STYLE AND TO CONGRATULATE THE FACULTY, STAFF, AND ADMINISTRATORS FOR FIVE YEARS OF PROVIDING OUTSTANDING VIRTUAL EDUCATION.

Whereas, celebrating its fifth year in operation, SC Whitmore School (SCWS) is a virtual public charter high school that seeks to serve students who do not fit into the traditional school model; and

Whereas, virtual education offers many benefits that can serve students who are looking for another way to learn and can encourage students to be personally committed to and responsible for their own education; and

Whereas, students can enroll in SCWS any time of the year, and the self-paced curriculum allows students to graduate early or to take the extra time they might need to master a subject; and

Whereas, in order to enable students to achieve their educational goals, SCWS emphasizes mastery of all academic courses and has assisted over two hundred at-risk students to complete high school, many of whom were not on track to graduate; and

Whereas, the unique program of SCWS that allows students to complete courses at their own pace has enabled twenty-five of their graduates to finish a full academic year early; and

Whereas, over one hundred of the school's students were accepted to and are attending colleges around the world; and

Whereas, SCWS graduates have also earned over one million dollars in scholarships in the five years since its founding; and

Whereas, in 2015, the End of Course exam pass rates exceeded the district average in all four categories, which consist of United States History, English 1, Algebra 1, and Biology; and

Whereas, as a part of the South Carolina Public Charter School District, one of the SCWS math teachers, Jean Redfearn, became the first virtual school teacher to win the district teacher of the year award in 2015, and she is currently competing for state teacher of the year; and

Whereas, SCWS currently has over four hundred students representing thirty-six of the state's forty-six counties; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives take great pride in the success and scope of the progress that these students have made under the auspices and supervision of the skilled faculty, staff, and administrators of SCWS and for the positive impact they are making across the Palmetto State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor SC Whitmore School for the significant work of educating students across the State who are seeking an alternative learning style and congratulate the faculty, staff, and administrators for five years of providing outstanding virtual education.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to SC Whitmore School.
