A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE HELEN C. DAVIS OF IRMO ON THE OCCASION OF HER ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY AND TO WISH HER A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND MUCH HAPPINESS IN THE DAYS AHEAD.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are delighted to learn that Helen C. Davis of Irmo will celebrate her one hundredth birthday on April 24, 2016; and

Whereas, born to Chase and Annie Cummings of Greensboro, North Carolina, Helen C. Davis entered this world on April 24, 1916, when the twentieth century was still in its youth, and she was a witness to nearly all the incredible changes and developments that have come to this nation from that time into the second decade of the twenty-first century; and

Whereas, in the fullness of time, the young Helen met William P. Davis, and the two were wed on December 24, 1937, God blessing their union with three children, seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; and

Whereas, in preparation for her career as an educator, she graduated from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro on June 5, 1937. Her diploma represented an amazing feat for that time: achieving a college education when only four percent of college graduates were women. This accomplished lady taught fourth grade until the age of seventy and then continued to volunteer until age eighty-four; and

Whereas, while overcoming great personal tragedy with faith and strength, she has always shown unconditional love to all those around her; and

Whereas, an accomplished seamstress, Helen loves to sew and read and continues to crochet baby blankets for special people. She also sews for her church program "Heart to Hands," which provides handmade items for missions; and

Whereas, this woman of faith finds her spiritual home at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Columbia and is especially known for her kindness and friendly smile; and

Whereas, the General Assembly is proud to honor this truly lovely lady at the celebration of her one hundredth birthday, and the members join with her family and friends in congratulating her on reaching this extraordinary milestone. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, congratulate Helen C. Davis of Irmo on the occasion of her one hundredth birthday and wish her a joyous birthday celebration and much happiness in the days ahead.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Helen C. Davis.
