A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO WELCOME HIGHLY ACCLAIMED ACTOR AND ACTIVIST DANNY GLOVER TO THE PALMETTO STATE AND TO EXPRESS PROFOUND APPRECIATION FOR HIS ADDRESS AT THE 2015 COMMENCEMENT OF VOORHEES COLLEGE.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina are pleased to welcome actor Danny Glover to the Palmetto State as he delivers the commencement address to the 2015 graduating class at Voorhees College; and

Whereas, founded in 1897 by Elizabeth Evelyn Wright-Menafee, who was barely older than some of today's students, Voorhees College is a fully accredited historically black liberal arts college in Denmark, South Carolina; and

Whereas, Voorhees College offers degrees in twelve disciplines, and through the college's long-standing affiliation with the Episcopal Church, Voorhees focuses on developing students spiritually, as well as intellectually; and

Whereas, this year's graduating class of uniquely qualified students will leave the sanctuary of the Voorhees family to embark on careers for which they have trained while students, and their sendoff will be celebrated by the profound and entertaining remarks of award-winning actor and producer, activist, and humanitarian Danny Glover; and

Whereas, a native of San Francisco, California, and a devoted father and grandfather, he is a graduate of San Francisco State University and was trained at the Black Actors Workshop of the American Conservatory Theatre; and

Whereas, Mr. Glover's performance career has spanned more than thirty years, including The Color Purple, Witness, Places in the Heart, and the blockbuster Lethal Weapon franchise in film, as well as hit television shows such as ER and Lonesome Dove; and

Whereas, through a myriad of popular roles, his performances have distinguished him as one of his generation's consummate actors, showcasing his talent and versatility and bringing him critical and audience acclaim; and

Whereas, off-screen, Danny Glover has gained respect for wide-reaching community activism and philanthropic efforts. Internationally, he has served as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Program, focusing on issues of poverty, disease, and economic development in Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. He currently serves as a UNICEF Ambassador; and

Whereas, in 2005, he co-founded New York-based Louverture Films to develop and produce films of historical relevance, social purpose, commercial value, and artistic integrity; and

Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly appreciates the work and philanthropy of Danny Glover on behalf of global human rights, economic and social justice, Afro-descendants, education, and citizenship through the arts, and the members join in welcoming him to our great State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, welcome highly acclaimed actor and activist Danny Glover to the Palmetto State and express profound appreciation for his address at 2015 commencement of Voorhees College.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Danny Glover.
