A JOINT RESOLUTION

PROPOSING AN AMENDMENT TO SECTION 1, ARTICLE XVII OF THE CONSTITUTION OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1895, RELATING TO THE QUALIFICATIONS FOR OFFICERS, SO AS TO EXEMPT AN APPOINTED OR ELECTED PERSON SERVING ON THE GOVERNING BODY OF SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY AND DELETE ARCHAIC REFERENCES.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION    1. It is proposed that Section 1, Article XVII of the Constitution of this State be amended to read:

"Section 1.    No A person shall may not be elected or appointed to any an office in this State unless he possess possesses the qualifications of an elector:. Provided, the provisions of this section shall do not apply to the offices of State Librarian and Departmental Clerks, to either of which offices any woman, a resident of the State two years, who has attained the age of twenty-one years, shall be eligible an appointed or elected person serving on the governing body of South Carolina State University."

SECTION    2.    The proposed amendment must be submitted to the qualified electors at the next general election for representatives. Ballots must be provided at the various voting precincts with the following words printed or written on the ballot:

"Must Section 1, Article XVII of the Constitution of this State be amended so as to exempt an appointed or elected person serving on the governing body of South Carolina State University from the requirement of being a qualified elector and to delete archaic references?

Yes    []

No    []

Those voting in favor of the question shall deposit a ballot with a check or cross mark in the square after the word 'Yes', and those voting against the question shall deposit a ballot with a check or cross mark in the square after the word 'No'."
