INVITATIONS AND MEMORIAL RESOLUTIONS

To whom was referred a Concurrent Resolution (H. 3897) to request that the Department of Transportation name the portion of South Carolina Highway 45 in Berkeley County from Gethers Funeral Home, etc., respectfully

REPORT:

That they have duly and carefully considered the same and recommend that the same do pass:

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE PORTION OF SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY 45 IN BERKELEY COUNTY FROM GETHERS FUNERAL HOME TO GREEN HILL ROAD "WILLIE G. GAMBLE HIGHWAY" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS ALONG THIS PORTION OF HIGHWAY THAT CONTAIN THIS DESIGNATION.

Whereas, a native of Berkeley County, Willie G. Gamble received his public school education in the Berkeley County school system, earned a bachelor of science from Claflin College in 1957, where he participated in the band and worked with the campus Sunday school and the Claflin Panther newspaper; and

Whereas, in the proud tradition of sons of the Palmetto State, he served two years with distinction in the United States Army during the Korean War before receiving an honorable discharge; and

Whereas, Mr. Gamble furthered his studies at South Carolina State University, St. Augustine College, The Citadel Notary Law Institute, and H & R Income Tax School; and

Whereas, he served as a classroom teacher in the Berkeley County school system for thirty years to educate the young minds in our State and yield productive citizens; and

Whereas, a devoted member of The New Light United Methodist Church in St. Stephen for more than sixty years, Mr. Gamble has served as the church's lay leader, president of the United Methodist Men, and chairman of the trustee board, finance committee, health and welfare board, and the administrative council; and

Whereas, he served his community on the St. Stephen Town Council and on the Executive Committee of the Democratic Party. He is Jefferson Grant #315 32nd Degree Mason, Jeddah Temple #160 and a member of American Legion Post 247, Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 7723, and the Claflin University International Alumni Association; and

Whereas, Mr. Gamble is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; NAACP Upper Berkeley County Branch; Berkeley County Concerned Citizens; Berkeley County Federal Credit Union, and Berkeley County Retired Educators Association; and

Whereas, among his many recognitions for service, he was awarded the Citizen of the Year Award from Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., and he was honored with the Berkeley County Liters Program Award and inclusion in the Claflin University Hall of Fame; and

Whereas, together with his beloved wife, Queen P. Gamble of Russellville, he reared three fine children, who blessed their parents with five adoring grandchildren and six great- grandchildren; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly appreciate the dedication and significant contributions that Willie Gamble has given to the field of education and to the students of Berkeley County and believe that it is fitting and proper to recognize his many accomplishments by having a portion of South Carolina Highway 45 in Berkeley County named in his honor. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly request that the Department of Transportation name the portion of South Carolina Highway 45 in Berkeley County from Gethers Funeral Home to Green Hill Road "Willie G. Gamble Highway" and erect appropriate markers or signs along this portion of highway that contain this designation.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
