A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE UNION COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL TEAM, COACHES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM ON WINNING THE 2015 CLASS AAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.

Whereas, fully ready for the challenge, the Union County High School softball team defeated Hartsville 10-7 and crowned its splendid season by capturing the 2015 Class AAA State Championship title; and

Whereas, the Lady Yellow Jackets (30-2) swept the best-of-three series and became the first team to win back-to-back Class AAA softball titles since 2009-2010; and

Whereas, in addition, the wild eleven-inning sweep handed the Yellow Jackets their second straight championship; and

Whereas, the game went to the international tiebreaker rule in the top of the ninth in extra innings and featured twelve combined errors, an ejection, and four lead changes. Union County scored four times in the top of the eleventh to put the game away; and

Whereas, by the time the Lady Yellow Jackets had sealed the win and claimed the crown, fans were already making plans for a return visit next year to see their team repeat the feat; and

Whereas, to make a superb season even sweeter, Union County standout pitcher Payton Martin was selected as the South Carolina Coaches Association of Women's Sports Class AAA Softball Player of the Year; and

Whereas, in a sport that demands skill, speed, and teamwork, Coach Tommy Petty and Assistant Coach Steve Walton capitalized on their own athletic ability and training to forge a championship team and teach their athletes lessons that will prove invaluable throughout life, both on and off the diamond; and

Whereas, the Union County High School softball players have brought great pride and recognition to their school and community, and their many admirers, including the members of the House of Representatives, look to hear of their continued accomplishments in the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Union County High School softball team, coaches, and school officials for an outstanding season and congratulate them on winning the 2015 Class AAA State Championship title.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Betsy Trakas, Coach Tommy Petty, and Assistant Coach Steve Walton of Union County High School.
