A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE MARGUERITE B. "PEGGY" WERTZ UPON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT AS PRINCIPAL OF ST. MARY HELP OF CHRISTIANS CATHOLIC SCHOOL IN AIKEN, TO COMMEND HER FOR HER MANY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE CHILDREN OF THIS STATE, AND TO WISH HER CONTINUED SUCCESS IN ALL HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to recognize Marguerite B. "Peggy" Wertz upon the occasion of her retirement; and

Whereas, a native of Aiken, Mrs. Wertz attended the University of South Carolina's early childhood education and master's in education programs; and

Whereas, Mrs. Wertz served the Aiken County School District as a principal and teacher for twenty-nine years. During her career, she was a reading teacher at Ridge Spring-Monetta Middle School; teacher at A.L. Corbett Middle School and North Aiken Elementary School; district level reading specialist; and principal of Oakwood-Windsor Elementary School, Busbee Elementary School, J.D. Lever Elementary School, and North Aiken Elementary School; and

Whereas, after a short retirement, Mrs. Wertz returned to the Aiken County School District to serve as a Title I coordinator for seven schools and a coordinator for the teachers of four-year-old kindergarten students. For much of her administrative career, Mrs. Wertz taught Reading Recovery, a one-on-one program with first-graders who were struggling with reading; and

Whereas, Mrs. Wertz also spent two years as the director of the Aiken County First Steps Board, working with public schools, private schools, and non-profit and for-profit day care centers on programs that would help prepare children for the first grade; and

Whereas, as the principal of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic School, Mrs. Wertz has fostered the parochial school's fine academic program and education of children toward academic excellence, spiritual growth, and moral integrity. An integral part of the family-oriented school, Mrs. Wertz came to St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic School in July 2005 with the background of her personal, lifelong experience interacting with the school as a former pupil and member of the parish; and

Whereas, Mrs. Wertz is also the author of three children's books: Becoming Father Bob, Becoming Sister Mary Grace, and Becoming Mr. and Mrs. Thomas; and

Whereas, Mrs. Wertz finds her strongest support in her family: her husband, Alan; her children, Meg, Katy, Charlotte, and Carter; and her three grandchildren; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are grateful for the passion and diligence that Marguerite B. "Peggy" Wertz has shown in serving the people and the State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate Marguerite B. "Peggy" Wertz upon the occasion of her retirement as Principal of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic School in Aiken, commend her for her many years of dedicated service to the children of this State, and wish her continued success in all her future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Marguerite B. "Peggy" Wertz.
